Hummingbird cake for dessert on Saturday. Hot chocolate mix. Barbecue smoked sausage.
Texas style hot chili, saurkraut for hot dogs, slaw salad instead of potato salad on Friday.

We're going to stop over at Mark Twain Lake Thursday to beak up the trip, see you all Friday afternoon. Got a batch of authentic Cincinnati Chili ready for Friday Coney dogs and the ice cream maker and Dutch oven blackberry cobbler ready for Saturday. If the cold weather hits, as predicted, a pot of hot spiced wine sounds good, too.

Attention attention

the core of engineers has closed thomson causway to camping starting 0900 on friday through 10/17.
E-mails and text messages with further instructions.

Most campgrounds in this area are effected as they are on the river.
We have scott county park, just north of davenport (10mi) no reservations

Probably won't make anything that is more than 125 miles away from me as Penny has commitment for Thur. nite then driving Fri. to attend event. I'm planning arrive Thur after lunch but to far won't make it. Don't have any sug. as to places to go. Mike had prev. stated 2 places. One by Princeton & other I believe Peoria area. Illini state park at Marseilles not that great and about 15 spots, prob. booked by now.

My understanding is there are some folks already on the road or will be tomorrow for the rally. I think it really comes down to those committed and on the way as to where we gather. The rest of us will have to decide if we can make the distance or not.

EDIT:

If the distance gets much greater for us, we may head to the Chain O Lakes State Park in Spring Grove. As much as we want to see everyone, Paden has a baseball game on Saturday that we cannot miss...120 miles is tops for us for only making one evening.

Just an FYI: I logged on to our Recreation.gov account just to verify if we needed to physically cancel our reservation or if the park closure cancelled them by default. A) They had updated the site which required a password reset (a pain, but thanks?), and B) they let me go through the exercise of canceling the reservation (at no cost) finally displaying the closure notice on the cancellation receipt. Not 100% sure that my logging on was absolutely necessary, but all worked out in the end.

Ha, as I typed my last post, an email came in from Recreation.gov:

"Thomson Causeway - Location Closure

We're sending you this message because of your Recreation.gov reservation, , at Thomson Causeway for Fri, Oct 12, 2018 - Mon, Oct 15, 2018.

A location closure has been issued.

Since this location closure overlaps with the dates for your trip, we wanted to provide you with options for how you can proceed:

Cancel your reservation and receive a full refund. You can review and cancel your reservation under the "My Account" section on Recreation.gov. Credit/debit card payments will be refunded to the card associated with your account, or you'll receive a refund check in the mail if you paid by cash or check (please allow up to 8 weeks). Hold your reservation (no action required) and see if the location reopens prior to your visit. If the location reopens before or during your reservation and you have not cancelled, you'll be able to take your trip. You will receive an email from Thomson Causeway indicating the location has reopened, and all standard change and cancellation policies will apply to your reservation. If the location remains closed through the end date of your trip, we will cancel your reservation and provide a full refund."

I'm not very familiar with the reserve America site, but it looks like Eagle Creek State park on Lake Shelbyville has plenty of sites available. Gina and I camped there a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed ourselves. Ranger had a blast there. It looks like all the sites are first come first served if that will work.

We're game for a small adventure, if it doesn't get too terribly complicated. Keep us posted as to where to go.

Up date: this was the 4th time this year we tried to camp at Thomson. Twice they have closed the park and twice the rain and wind almost forced us out.
Now for here; Wednesday in the 70's and rain, and in the afternoon goes to .......
The rest of the week, highs in the 40's and lows in low 30's and wind 15-20mph. We should be protected from the wind. Sorry, but that's camping.
Dana and I are still planning in going out possibly mid-late PM depending on the rain.
Hope to see some there.
Mike

Thanks Brian for the heads up concerning cancelling. We had the same experience.
A BIG thanks to Dana & Mike for trying so hard to pull this all together.
It's a 3 hour drive from Chicago and we are coming with 2 trailers. If we leave on Thursday morning we could be there by noon - 1pm. What do you think our chances are getting 2 sites at Scott County?

As of now, I think all would get a site considering the weather. It's the temp forecast that should be considered. COLD!
