Chas ~
Heron Lake is at 7,200 feet, weather was warm during the days...but crisp & cool at night....perfect camping weather
John is aka "Mr Poll" and is pictured on the webpage...
No fires here yet this year...knock on aluminum!
Might be a bit ambitous to try and beat the numbers at an International Rally...aren't they up to about 2000 this year? But we can try...

D*** bugs
Yes the description on your website about chiggers fits to the "T" of what has been eating me.
Chas - elevation would be about 5 to 6000 feet maybe. However I had to get over 7000 + in Flagstaff to get there. And there was a fire south of I-40 east of Flag that had blocked the interstate on Tuesday. By Thursday it was far enough away.

fire, chiggers and high altitude
We just completed our 2200 mile trip and arrived safely in Austin.
The rally in NM was a blast. Great people, good food and those martinis.....Sue!!
My German friends were convinced that we all have known each other for a long time. What a surprize it was when I told them that it was our first get together. They really dug the Airstream spirit and commented on the uniqueness of the trailers (mh's) as well as the personalities.
We hung with the chiggers for another day before we started our decent to the flat lands.
But I wasn't quiet happy yet with the four 9K plus passes we had driven, so we went down to Los Alamos on Hwy 4 towards Jemez Springs. Another great pass up to 9000' with fire scarred forest left and right. what a spooky place. Once we reached the summit I could see smoke billowing on the horizon. The traffic with strangely light with nobody going the way we were.
But at least there was some traffic coming the other way...fire trucks. Well, we decided not to spend the night up in the high country and left the forest at a notable speed. We passed a long passenger bus with a sign that read:fire crew. We spend the night at a safe KOA in Albuquerque and watched the news about the huge fire NW of Jemez Springs, called the virgin fire.
It was a great pleasure meeting everyone and our thanks to Shari and a special thank you to our Host John!!

I was thinking about you all wondering how you made out because I knew you were going to take that route and I found out later there was a fire through there - was wondering how you made out. What did you all think of that caldera? Pretty cool huh?
Regarding altitude headaches, you can usually prevent/minimize by drinking LOTS of water.
Still itching

Hi everyone
I think we recovered enough from the shock of participating in our first ralley to actually register as a real member of the forum. Thank you all for being gracious in making your aquaintance with an outsider. Sorry that most of you could not stay longer - guess there is an ever so tiny advantage of not being quite as young. Yes, staying longer also meant itching in more more places : scratch, scratch...
Thanks again for the good times !

Hey guys!
Been lurking and following the discussion of the biting bugs last weekend. I've just spent an entire evening researching the critters I observed gnawing on my legs. My conclusion is that they are:
BITING MIDGES (Ceratopogonidae)
AKA: "No-See-Ums"
Length ranges from .6mm to 3mm long, in the family of biting flies. The ones I saw were blackish in color and flew in swarms. I've attached a GREATLY magnified picture below for reference.
It was great meeting all of you!

When do we meet again?
So should we set a date for the next time we meet?
Next year?
Later this year?
Same place?
Or wait until the camp hosts spray for chiggers? (John are ya gettin this?)
And Rob .... viewing that pic and my legs have not been a pleasure! (Isn't he a little warped?)

I thought they were no-See-Um's. At least someone said that. Thank goodness that picture isn't life size. I've probably got about 75 red, itchy welts just above the sock line. Guess they're pretty lazy or they can't fly too well because they bit into the exposed skin closest to the ground. Were they in the bushes and tall grass?

JIm's White Chili
TinCanSue asked me for the recipe for the white chili that I contributed to dinner. I can't email her directly, so the recipe is posted here.
Jim’s White Chili
1 # chicken, cut into small pieces
½ cu chopped onion
2 cu chicken broth – 1 can
4 oz. Can chopped green chilies
1 t garlic powder
1t cumin
½ t oregano
½ t cilantro
1/8 t red pepper
½ can white hominy
19 oz. can white kidney beans (cannelloni) undrained
Monterey Jack cheese and fresh cilantro for garnish
Sauté chicken until mostly cooked. Add salt and black pepper to flavor. Add onion and sauté until translucent. Add herbs and spices except cilantro if using fresh, and sauté two minutes.
Add everything else except garnish and simmer 30 to 60 minutes.
Serve with garnish. It’s best if served next day.
I am very liberal about quantities, use fresh herbs if available, always use roasted chilies from the farmers market, and have been known to use turkey, sausage, or pork in place of chicken.
Sue, hope you enjoy the chili, and hope to see you again.

By popular demand, the only thing of interest I had to offer, besides the bugs on my radiator screen.

Peter,
That flashlight holder is great, too bad it doesn't come in aluminum so you could polish it. If the hardware store has those grommets, maybe I'll try to fabricate one.

No-See-Um's
Hey Guys,
The no-see-um's are the tiny bugs that have caused us so many red bites.
They only last a month, but they were in full force while you all were here.
I'm bit head to toe- John

I would have posted sooner, but I've been scratching! No-See-Ums ---- poor dog even has some bits. But they don't last and we are all well and back home in E Texas. We had just come from Flagstaff to the rally and the same critters were there as well. Don't have them here in E Texas (but we do have other pests)..
Yes, it was a great gathering!!!! I feel James Bond would have liked the coctail hour, too!!!
Folks in other parts of the country --- you need to put something like this together!!! Pick a time (at least 2 months notice) and a place (State Park, Corps of Engineer Park or some pasture/farm). Things have a way of working out just fine. And you never know - someone that was in New Mexico might just show up at your gathering.
Our next trip in the Airstream will be to New York State/New Jersey the end of September (Pat's 50th class reunion)--- see if the Orange Truck can make the hills!!!
Thanks gang for a great time in the Land of Enchantment!!

Hello East Texas,
Really dig your tow vehicle! You probably could have pulled the whole forum up them thar hills!! Guess if any of us ever see you on the highways you will surely be recognized. The color looks familiar, did your truck previously belong to a now-defunct trucking company? (The name escapes me but it sure looks familiar) Looks like you bobbed the rearmost drive axle off of it?

C,
I am sure Don can expand on his truck, and....
He bought it from (a dealer of) Schneider Trucking. Schneider is still in business and they have orange tractors. Don's has not been repainted, however the trucking company names have been removed.
The front drive axle was removed and the back drive axle was moved up and connected to the driveshaft. With the weight that Don is towing, 2 dual rear axles were not needed. Then the frame was cut (shortened) to eliminate the overhang, and a ball hitch was added.
The truck only had 750,000 miles on it when Don bought! And you could have one too if you choose.

Campfire Ban
Hey All-
Good thing we didn't have the Rally this weekend. A Campfire/Charcoal fire ban was instated today for all of NM State Parks, BLM, National Forest & private land within NM.
Again- I enjoyed our time-John
