NW Mini-Rally - Newport Seafood and Wine Festival

Hi all, I am goin to the Newport Seafood and Wine Festival on February 24th - 26th. Before I make any reservations I wanted to throw this out there. I have four places in mind to camp.

Sawyers Landing
Harbor Village
Port of Newport
South Beach State Park

I am going regardless but if there was some intrest I would reserve at a place that had more available spaces. I will be making a decision on a place Monday.

Chris

Well after the last 9 hour trip to Newport, I think we'll pass. If it was Spring Break...maybe. But sounds like a great trip, good beachcombing, and good food/wine. Wish we lived a little closer. By the way there is also a Newport WA too.

I don't blame ya there. It is a long drive for you three. I figured I'd be going solo anyway but it would be fun to share the experience. I have been frequenting this festival for a few years now. It is always a great time, even if I go solo. Apparently there are a lot of other Newports around ! Who knew ? Ha !

Yeah, I was thinking Newport, RI as well. Immediately what came to my mind was how could you possibly pull an Airstream through that town?

It's a good event - but the weather doesn't always cooperate... we played there many years ago on an outdoor stage. It was kinda damp - but the wine was great and after sufficient quantity - the rain just didn't seem to be an issue....

Newport! There is a Newport, TN. in the eastern part of the state. If only it was there! I'm a transplanted Texan who grew up on shrimp, blue crab and oysters.

Hi Chris, That sounds like fun! And we'll just be finished with the play we're putting on. I'll put it on the calendar and see if we can make it. Let us know where you end up camping.

When you see the words landing, port, harbor and beach associated with Newport what else would one think? Besides I lived in Newport, RI for three years when it was a Navy town. But I did enjoy the America's Cup in 1970 and took in the Newport Jazz Festival in 1969 that was the precursor warmup for Woodstock. Jazz Festival by then was a misnomer. It was a zoo during those two times but when I revisited 6 years ago it was even worse. Bumper to bumper traffic everywhere throughout the town in those narrow streets. If you could pull an Airstream through that town you would be pretty good.

Janet, If I read the website corectly they have a new bigger building next to the Rogue Brewery to have the Festival in. You are right about the weather. After a few "tastes" of wine it is less important.

Steph, well I am leaning to South Beach. Anita is there hosting. But if you look at her avatar I have to wonder about the water in the campground ?

Anita, Are there any sites there that aren't too soggy ? Which loop are you hosting in ?

Uwe, funny post. Isn't it on the way to Baja ? lol. j/k

Hi Chris,
From Harbor Village, you can walk down the bayfront and take a water taxi across the bay. Port of Newport RV is right next door to the venue which has moved to the other side of the marina parking (I'll be busy keeping telephones and stuff running that weekend in the building). There are shuttle buses running throughout Newport during the weekend (maybe Anita knows if they run out to South Beach State Park...it's about a mile south of the venue. Sawyer's Landing is nice, right on the bay, but you'd have to carpool from there. Enjoy!

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the info. I am leaning towards Sawyers or SB. I'd like to have a campfire pit. So that kinda leaves out HV and the Port RV park. I am going to be there on Friday, Saturday there gets pretty crowded. Where will you be working ? I could stop by and say HI.

South Beach State Park

South Beach is on the sand, so most of the water disappears in the ground quickly. I noticed that several of the campsites are still available in the inside loop of D. I will probably not have a chance until Monday to get down there and check out any sites. There is also the possibility that South Beach will open the E, F, and G loops. And I don't know if the shuttle leaves South Beach. I'll check in to that, too.

Thanks Anita, I appreciate the effort. I'd like to have a site that stays above water even in the rain ! lol. Can you point me in the direction of some more favorable sites ?

South Beach State Park

Did you make your reservations? The last I looked, South Beach had D28 and D30 available. D32 was also available, but it has the restroom trail right beside the site. These are interior circle sites, I think all the exterior ones are taken. So they are not designed for RV's -the pavement goes straight back, rather than angled. D23 was also available. Let me know if you have any questions. Most sites aren't soggy!

Chris, let me know what spot you get. Looks like it works for our schedule so we'll get a spot nearby.
