Metro Detroit 2012
Happy New Year!!! I hope everyone is doing well. I figured the old thread pretty much died so it was time to start a new one. Planning is underway for this year's rally. We are searching for a new campground so if you have any leads let us know.

New campground?!? Were we so rude last year that Indian Creek asked us not to come back or are you just adding to the variety?
If you're looking for a new place though...a personal suggestion would be to find something closer to The Henry Ford. We spent a day there a year or two ago and would like to go back, but it seems every time we camp in MI that we're at least a good 1 to 1.5 hour drive from there so we skip it.

The problem is there isn't much closer to The Henry Ford. I've looked before for others who wanted to stay close by. We've been at Indian Creek for two years and that is usually the time we move on. I also think she was quite uncomfortable with us since it is a dry campground.

I always wondered about how we got away with the trailer crawl in that park.
The Henry Ford website offers combo packs for Camp Dearborn and a place called Detroit Greenfield. Det. Green. looks like your typical tight packed commercial campground. Haas Lake (Novi) looks nice. Wayne Co. Fairgrounds...probably does well with groups but would likely be very no-frills. I didn't see any open statements of no alcohol on any of the sites I looked at briefly.
A very one-sided perspective from me; but I also wouldn't mind pushing a bit north or northeast. It's only a 3-3.5 hour drive for us in north-central OH now. I could push it a bit further, I think. Also, maybe back to KC? I never made it to a DM rally there.
Just ideas since you said you're looking...

There's lots of open ground right in Detroit... find some empty lots and have at it. Pit bulls would be welcome and firearms are expected.
Camp Dearborn would be nice . and what about some of the other state parks, also might check out Walter J. Hayes State Park in the Irish Hills area. WJH is a great state park with lots of amenities and camp sites. About 20 minutes west of Indian Creek

What are the dates for the Metro Detroit 2012? If the rally is toward the end of the month we may be able to attend. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see how things shape up.
Danielle and I stayed at Camp Dearborn last year and we thought it was reasonable. Part of our stay was on a Holiday weekend and it sure was full but everyone was reasonably well behaved. After the weekend crowd cleared out we were one of a dozen or so rigs remaining in the campground. We enjoyed the area and found lots of interesting things to do and see in the area.

Actually I was thinking the same thing about Detroit! We could call it urban adventure camping or something! Hey Al would that be close enough to Canada for you?!

A few of the big considerations we have for when we choose a campground is if they will hold a block of sites for us and if they charge for the pavillion or meeting area. There were several campgrounds that wanted to charge us $150-$200 for them. No date yet but I know for sure it won't be August 11-12 because that is the MI WBCCI All State weekend. Probably either the 18th-19th or 25th-26th. All depends on what's available at whatever campground we come up with. Sorry that's all I know right now.

You know we drove through it several years ago but I don't remember what we didn't like about it. Maybe because there isn't many sites? It was 4-5 years ago, my memory is foggy.

Not too keen on that idea Rhonda. Did that with my then future wife Jean thirty odd years ago and don't think I would do it now if I can help it.
Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to planning these rallies.

We've camped several years at Camp Dearborn for the TCT spring rally. Nice facility, not a far drive to Henry Ford Museum, and easy to get to. I like it.

If this rally comes together in mid to late August, I'm in! Would love to meet everyone in my area...relatively new to Airstreaming.
Love the south end near the Henry Ford or the North End of the state, Hartwick Pines is nice or near the Ocqueoc Falls...they just rebuilt the falls and it is beautiful.
I'll watch this thread to see if the dates will work.
The best part of January is planning March through November! Happy New Year everybody.

Hello Detroiters : We're from Windsor just across the river from you and brought a C34 into the family last May.
To date, the only rally we've attended was Alumapalooza, & so we're looking very forward to being able to attend your area rally as well, since we're so close.
Am I correct in understanding that when you folks set up a get together...you prefer boondocking ??
Just curious.

We like as many amenities as we can get away with!!!!!!
We hope that you will find a spot that is not too far from Ohio! This rally is a great group to get together with!

Rhonda
I have to agree with Lou.We are clear in SW OHIO so as close to the line as you can get it will work. You have no idea what I have to go thru to get ML accross into Michigan. Im afraid much of any farther north would maybe keep us from comming. Then again we might not be missed.

Dave and I are planning on seeing Antsy and the Troubs when they play outside of Cincinnati in Harrison on March 31st. I figured I'd put the word out and see if y'all wanted to make it a group troup again? We were thinking of staying in a hotel again but for those brave of heart there is a campground in Harrison.
