Cara,
I am moving a Thule rack from another car onto the truck cab. I only had to buy a new adapter kit for $65 buck. Check Craigslist. People are always selling them on there.

We may be able to make it but not sure yet. Probably won't know until the last minute. We used to tent camp and fish with our 14' aluminum boat up there but haven't been back for 20 years. It would be nice to see it again! We used to troll for trout and the fishing was awesome back in the day.

What's the best way to catch trout up there?

We used to troll with our powerboat using trolling spinner blades, terminated with a live nightcrawler or a needlefish lure. Always caught our limit. This will take some musclepower with a canoe. Probably just fishing with nightcrawlers would be the best bet. I'm not sure where the sell them up there so it may be a good idea to pick some up on the way. I'm sure they sell them in Shaver Lake and probably at Wishon too. Other than that, power bait for still fishing or small spinners like Roostertails or Panther/Martin lures may be productive too.

I think I'm going to go with power bait and bobbers for the kids.

What's the best way to cook trout?

Whole, pan-fried in a little butter suits my taste!

Hey Peter, I am seriously thinking of making this trip. I love the Sierras. Is their a place near the campground where I came get fresh water for my trailer. I really don't want to haul an extra 30 gallons all the way their. I am thinking of bringing my paddle board. Kenny

Do you need a hose fill or can you transfer via 5 gallon container? The campground itself has water spigots. Otherwise you can probably fill via hose at Shaver Lake, but I'll check to see.

BTW it would be totally awesome if you came. I'm sure we can find a way to get you water. Plus, who really needs it anyway? Just bring some drinking water, and jump in the lake to shower/wake up.

Jason,
I didn't get a fishing license this year but I'll bring my fly fishing rod if you want to give it a try. The trout get hungry before sunset.
Also, if we manage to bring the canoe, I'm borrowing my dad's which comes with a silent, 3-hp trolling motor.
Then we can buzz the kayaks.

Yeah, my kayaking skills are pretty good but I probably can't beat a lightweight boat with a motor.

I actually just sold my only car-toppable sailboat, but I had been trying for a month and it was getting to the point where if I didn't sell it by the previous weekend then I was going to stop trying until after this camping trip. That would have given your canoe a challenge at least, since it went up to 14 knots.

I'll make sure to bring a grappling hook so that my kayak can come along for a free ride.

I thought I read on one of the campground pages that no fees were required for fishing. I took that to mean no fishing license is required. I guess I was wrong. Can anyone confirm that a fishing license is required?

Yeah, I'll try the fly rod!

I will call the ranger's office when I have a chance. I was assuming basic fishing license required, and planned to get one at a sporting goods store before I go up there. I'll check though.

Fishing licenses are required. They commented that the no fees or permits is regarding the use of boats at Courtright Reservoir. All state fishing regulations are still in effect. Luckily there is nothing special about trout from the state's perspective, so it is just the basic license. $46 all year, $23 for 2 days, $15 for 1 day, or you might qualify for other discounts: Sport Fishing Fees and Descriptions - California Department of Fish and Wildlife

If you don't get it before you go up, you can purchase them at the Wishon village general store

I just talked to Wishon Village General Store about water for our trailers. They have free water out front and everything needed to fish at Courtwright at thir store (fish license, night crawlers, etc). They are located 1/2 mile past the Courtwright turn off @ 66500 McKinley Rd. #559.865.5361

Well things just got interesting. Tried to take off the wheels in order to paint them a glossy red and this happened.

The good news is that I was planning to do this eventually anyway. But not on a two week deadline.

Edit: I guess my new phone uploads the photos upside down? 0 for 2 tonight

Oops, that doesn't look good, glad that didn't fail while you were on the road! I presume you are going to replace both sides. Wish we were going to be there for the boondock rally. I'm sure all of you will have a great time.

We depart next Friday for a 5 night camping trip in San Diego with our two grand-daughters. We are staying at Campland by the Bay (about as far from boondocking as you can get). But it is real kid friendly and close to my sister and her family. The following week we are going up to Vancouver Washington to see Becky's parents so the girls can see and visit their great grand parents. Looks like lots of traveling, but it will be a ton of fun with the grand kids.

I'm sure we will see most of you at Jackson for the fall rally. So, take care and have fun and safe travels.
