We’re interested in attending, too! Finally it works for me to be out of school on those dates. We’ll keep checking Topsail’s website for a site to open up and will follow this thread.

The site you’ll need to follow (exceedingly regularly

) is ReserveAmerica as that is where you’ll make reservations for Topsail Reserve State Park.
Also, I have kindly requested for anyone who will be canceling to post here FIRST and allow fellow Canopenians to snag the site and keep the park all silver all the time!

We are looking for a site if anyone can’t make it. I know it’s early and cancellations usually come in December but we would like to lock in a site .

I hope the park is not damaged badly by Michael! Last local hurricane tore Destin shoreline to pieces and destroyed blocks of buildings at the coast.

Looking at the map, I hope the park was west enough to avoid major damage. I'm sure there were some anxious moments.
I hear it's beautiful. I doubt anyone has gone in to assess the damage yet.

I heard Governor Huckabee talk about Santa Rosa this morning. He rode out the storm in his home there and said that they were fortunate because the winds that hit them were coming from the north as the storm circulated around so the wind actually pushed back some of the water. He said they were lucky.

We have friends that live just east of Topsail and they said they left since they were going to Atlanta this weekend anyway, but their neighbors report very little damage.

What I am more worried about is our Canopener friends who live in Panama City!

We will be there. At present we will be in the Grayton Beach SP "annex" site 58. Look for Sue's flags.

My daughter lives north of there. She reported that they had some scary winds but little to no damage. Topsail like all the panhandle SPs closed. I expect by January it will be open again. The bad damage was Panama east to Applach and up into the north of there. Blounstown got a lot of tree and building damage.

I spoke with the ranger at Topsail last week and she said they suffered minimal damage and their staff along with the park volunteers are taking care of their clean up.
They are currently closed to the public as they are now full with contractors helping in the area restoration.
They anticipate being back open sometime in November and I’ll be following up with her in a couple of weeks after they’ve talked with officials in Tallahassee.
In the meantime she said Do Not cancel your reservations due to the storm. If you Need to cancel, PLEASE post here and on the Facebook Canopener Page FIRST so someone else can reserve your site.

Crazy season is coming up fast. There are people who cancel on short notice, so check Reserve America often, or, enlist a website that will notify you of a cancellation. Be prepared to act fast if you go this route, as Canopener and all Florida state parks in January are popular.
