I was going to put: Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, eggs, and spam. But I didn't want to screw up the list just for a joke...

Wow! I haven't been on AirForums for awhile and when I started reading this thread, I thought of the line "Look out Ma, I don't know how big this thing is gonna get" (Canopener, that is). It is truly amazing how many units have RSVP'd for this one.....I remember when we didn't even fill up loop 103. Obviously, Russ and Tom, et al, have done a great job of growing Canopener into what it is today. I recognized so many familiar names on the signup list that it made Jenn and I start talking about renting one of the cabins. It might be time that someone stepped up and dethroned DH as the Cornhole Champion. So pack an extra bottle of Tekilla Greg, and maybe an extra bit of potatoe squeezing from Annette, cause we might be haunting your neighborhood in January.

Bug in your ear

Fellow Canopenians, lend me your ears:

Canopener 2015 is quickly approaching.
As we are preparing for another great rally, I wanted to put a bug in your ear about next year.

As you know, Canopener is run by an all-volunteer staff which allows us to operate without any rally fees. This year we have over 100 Airstreams attending. I wonder if there is any other Forum rally with a larger attendance? Credit to the folks who established the rally and the event locale.

The rally has been staffed by the same volunteers for a number of years. These folks have enjoyed the opportunity to put on the event, but have all indicated they are ready to hand over the reins to some new leadership for 2016.

Seems to me we have two choices if we wish for the event to carry on:
New leaders step up and volunteer or
We transition to a free-form rally and just show up with no real schedule and let whatever happens happen.
Neither seems to be a bad choice, but I think having some structure for the event is desirable.

The current positions and responsibilities include:
(You will note in recognition of our current administration, I have given the title of “czar” to these positions so they will not require any kind of authorization or approval from anyone)

Event Host Czar: Luckyducks handled 2013 and 2014, yours truly 2015. The host coordinates the event with park management, opens the event on the Forum, establishes the RSVP thread, coordinates the event with attendees and sponsors and coordinates the assembly of the welcome packets. Also recruits volunteers to head up the potlucks, cleanup and other such details and coordinates the distribution of door prizes as the host of the Saturday night potluck festivities.

Map Coordinator/Event Documentation Czar: Florida 55 has handled the last two years. Chuck has followed the RSVP’s and entered attendees information on the Topsail map which is included in your welcome packet. Chuck has also functioned as our “videographer” by putting together a video highlighting the event and posting. This is a great position for those of you who are computer savvy…..and completely eliminates me from consideration.

Name Tag Czar: Roadtoaster has created name tags for each attendee and provided the list of names for the door prize drawing for the past several years. You door prize winners will really appreciate Pat and Greg’s efforts, losers not so much. I understand we have a volunteer to cover this position for 2016.

Cornhole Competition Czar: one of the highlights of the rally, this event has almost 100% participation of attendees. The coordinator sets up the event ensuring we have sufficient cornhole sets and assistants, collects entry fees, keeps up with parings and scores, and announces the winners. StanandLynn have handled for the past few years and done a outstanding job. Luckyducks is handling this year as StanandLynn recently had to cancel (thanks, Luckyducks!).

Potluck Coordinating Czars: these are the wonderful folks who help ensure the Thursday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday morning feeds go smoothly. They help set up the venues and ensure all is cleaned up afterward. Requires very little prodding of attendees, usually you have more folks volunteering than you could possibly use, and Canopeanians kinda clean up after themselves anyway.

These are the basic positions which would need to be filled with new volunteers for next year. If you would be interested let us know and we will be glad to answer any questions and mentor you along. Ideally we could have prospective leaders for next year’s rally “shadow” this year’s leaders to get an idea of how we approached things.

I'm gonna hurl!!!!!!!

Brother Tom,

Life this year has taught me that the plans we make for the future are sketchy at best. I intend to reconnect with my Canopener family every year for the foreseeable future until I stop breathing. I feel that regardless of the organizational hierarchy, Canopener will live on through the efforts of all of us that plan to attend in the coming years. But I gotta say this, if you use the word "Czar" one more time moving forward, I'm gonna hurl!!!!

I commit to filling in along with anyone else out there that wants to continue to attend Canopener and help in any way possible. From pushing a broom, to editing video, or whatever needs to be done. But if I'm ever referred to as a Czar, I will be forced to shove my Safari off the nearest cliff and go back to tent camping. You know where I stand.

How about "Tsar"?...

If Florida55 needs a break, I believe Mrs Red and I would be willing to be the Site Map and Awesome Movie Czar... I have to get this by Mrs Red, naturally, but she does an awesome job of video production, and is my resident computer wiz. So, tentatively put us down for that spot... I'll let you know shortly for definite.
