to deal with.

i thought we'd try a different route this time.

there is also rte 40 west from Ormond Beach then north on 75 but it looks like a lot of lights on rte 40.

any thoughts or suggestions? we are taking 2 days to get there so no real rush on the roads. after all, getting there is part of the fun.

thanks

We take 40 through the Forrest, to 326 just outside of Silver Springs, then loop that up around Ocala over to I-75 (when we're coming home from Flagler beach). From there to Lake City on 75 to I-10... Etc. etc.

Or, if you want to avoid interstates, take 326 all the way around to 27, 27 to 19, 19 to 98, then take the long trip along the coast on 98...

-Red, still trying to decide his own route...

THREE! Number of calendar days until I retire from Federal service.
TWO! Number of work days until I retire.
EIGHT! Number of days until I'm Destin-bound.

Thanks for the rte ideas.

Through the woods sounds like a nice drive. Was there a lot of stoplights / slow traffic through the towns?

Your other rte is a bit longer than we would want. We plan to overnight near lake city before reaching top sail the next day.

We don't mind the highways, it's just nice to take different rats when you have a bit of extra time.

Sorry (well, not really) but I couldn't resist. Besides, I type with one finger most of the time. But when I'm fully up to speed I can use one finger on each hand, plus a thumb for the space bar. I'm a proud graduate of the Hunt and Peck School of Typing.

Additional information regarding Canopener

Morning folks. Wishing you all a Happy and Safe New Year.

As previously mentioned, I am passing along some additional information we have posted in the past.
This first one covers points of interest close by Topsail:

Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast - 7800 US Highway 98, Miramar Beach, FL 32550.
Directions from Topsail: go north .5 miles on Highway 30A to Highway 98, then turn left (west) on Highway 98, and go another 1.8 miles to the hospital (on the right).
Total driving distance is 2.3 miles.

Walmart - 6712 US Highway 98 West, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.
There's a Walmart very close to the park. It's one of the new smaller Walmarts (locals call it the Smallmart) but has a full grocery section.
Directions from Topsail: go north .5 miles on Highway 30A to Highway 98, and then turn left (west) on Highway 98, go another .7 miles to the store on the right.
Total distance 1.2 miles.

Publix grocery stores - Two of these very nice stores nearby:

(1) 2038 US Highway 98 West, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.
If you are arriving via Highway 331 from the north, at Highway 98 turn right to the west towards the park and you will drive past a Publix on the right side of Highway 98.
Total distance from park: 6 miles.

(2) 725 Grand Boulevard, Sandestin, FL 32550.
If you are already at the Topsail, there's a Publix that's closer. Follow the directions to the Walmart but just go another 1.5 miles further west.
Total distance from park: 2.7 miles.

Lowes or Home Depot - both of these stores are further west on Highway 98, about a 15 minute drive from the park.

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park - for those of you with GPSs, here is the address from the park website - 7525 West Scenic Highway 30A, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.

We don't mind the highways, it's just nice to take different rats when you have a bit of extra time.

Just a few lights on the 326 loop. Not as bad as going through Silver Springs/Ocala. Made that mistake... Once! Also a light or two along 40. Nothing too bad. It's a pretty nice ride. We only take 40 as far as Barberville (17), so I don't know how it is east of Barberville. I mistakenly said this was our Flagler Beach route... It's actually our "Go visit my brother in Debary" route...

I live 15 miles out of Lake City. We're a little bit out of the way, but you're welcome to overnight in our yard if you'd like...

-Red, really gearing up for Canopener now!!!

Campground Map Update 1-1-2015

Happy New Year everyone! Only a week to go until Canopener 2015 is underway.

Over the past few days there have been some cancellations and site moves. I've tried to reflect them in the map updates below. Please take one more look at the maps and advise me of any changes through the RSVP page or via PM. I'll be publishing and printing the final maps on Sunday, January 4. We'd like them to be as accurate a possible.

Unfortunately plans change at the last minute. If you have to change your plans to attend the rally, please let us know on the RSVP page. Link below:

Canopener last minute tip #2

Happy New Year, folks! Continuing our offering of tips for Canopener 2015:

More Info for Potlucks

1. Please label your food dish. We have people who are allergic to certain foods, so labeling can be very important. Plus, sometimes it's hard to determine exactly what the food dish is when the table is full of other food items.

2. Bring your own plates/bowls and eating utensils for all potlucks.

3. Bring your own drinks. There will be coffee and juices at the breakfast potluck.

4. With the increased number of attendees this year, we may exceed the seating capacity of the clubhouse for the Thursday evening and Sunday morning potlucks. Suggest you bring along a chair just in case and be flexible if table space runs short.

Thanks and will keep you posted.
Tom

This year we are dedicating the tournament to Cynthia Thoede, a long-standing member of our Canopener family who passed away suddenly in September. She and her husband Jeff (Forum name Rivetng) were both known as fierce competitors once the old bag of corn started flying. The entry fee this year will be $5/competitor (or whatever amount over $5 you wish to contribute). All proceeds will be donated to the Gadsden Street United Methodist Church Children and Youth Programs, Pensacola, FL in memory of Cynthia’s dedication to the church and youth. Jeff will be attending and you will still have to fight him on the playing field!

In preparation for the tournament, we need additional cornhole boards (at least 2 more sets) and volunteers for judges/scorekeepers (instruction will be provided). Please sign up below if you are playing or can help. Last minute sign-ups at the tournament location are welcome. This is a single elimination tournament.

Rules and information on the game of cornhole are at: Official Rules for Corn Toss, Cornhole, Bean Bag and Bean Toss

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Players:
1. HowieE
2. Jeff T.
3. Pete

Can Bring Cornhole Boards:
1. Luckyducks
2. Rum Runner
3. Moonkitty

Judges/Scorekeepers:
1. Braith Eldridge
2. Annette Conoly - margaritas accepted as bribes, err... payment,I mean refreshment..

We always travel with our boards so we'll contribute. Pete just had a knee replacement end of November but he still wants to participate. I may join in but I'm really not a very good player.

Jeff, we'll be sure and attend Cynthia's tribute Friday night. I loved the video you did in her honor and look forward to watching it with everyone.

Leaving Monday from chilly Delaware. Looking forward to meeting and seeing everyone.

Canopener Rally Registration and Cancellations

Plans sometimes change at the last minute. If you have to cancel your plans to attend Canopener 2015 please let the rally organizers know by communicating your change of plans on the rally RSVP page. You will also need to separately advise the campground you are canceling your site reservation.

Likewise if you have a campground reservation, and are planning to attend Canopener but haven't yet registered with the rally, we ask you to note your plans on the rally RSVP page.

To record your plans on the RSVP page, go to the page, using the link below. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Click the appropriate button. In the "comment" square type in your site number and first names of the attendees if you are registering. If you are canceling, in the "comment" section indicate you are canceling and your site number.

Thank you for your help.

Party time!

Crazy time of year for us but we made it through another year. Looking forward to seeing old friends. Have a new Chihuahua (rescue) to come along with the black pug. It appears that it will start warming up by the weekend. Theresa and I will plan on being there Wed around lunch time. See you all soon.

We will not be able to attend. I left a message on the RSVP page. We have to cancel for this year. My mother in law is very ill. Thanks for all the hard work! I am sure everyone will have a good time.
