It is with sad regret that I have to announce that we aren't going to be able to make the rally due to some unexpected repairs on our unit that I woun't be able to complete in time to make it. I'll try to break away Saturday and come down for the day to at least meet you all. I was really looking forward to this but our camper has some leak issues I have to attend to. I had site #141 reserved but cancelled it this afternoon.

If you're coming from out of state, bring some warm clothes, looks like a cold front will be coming through. In the past, we were able to keep our trailer rather warm with the roof unit set on low heat and used a small electric heater.

Ok, we left NY on the 26th, we traveled 1285 miles to the Pensacola Airstream Pk, so we're real close by.

We plan to pull in Wed or Thur.

Our friends are with us "Metro NY" Joe & Joan.

See ya soon.

Hey Greg when are you leaving and what route are you taking? Inquiring minds want to know.

Leaving Thursday morning around 6 or 7. Forgotten the exact route but through B'ham. Seems like we go through Opp and Florala (sp) and then across the old bay bridge. Puts us just east of the CG. About 500 miles from my drive.

Hey there ya'll,

From Mystic Springs Park you could just go south on Hwy 29 to Pensecola, then go over Hwy 98, but that way you'll be in a lot of stop and go traffic.
I'd like to suggest a less stressful and more scenic route that you can check out on the map.
Go North on Hwy 29 to Century, get a burger at WhatABurger right before Hwy 4 (they're good), then take a right (East) on Hwy 4 to Baker. At Baker take a right at the traffic light, only one in town, and go south about 4 miles to Hwy 90. Turn left to Crestview to Hwy 85, (2nd light you'll come to), travel south on Hwy 85 until you get to Niceville. Then go East on Hwy 20 (John Sims Pkwy) until you get to the turn to take the Mid Bay Bridge, go on bride and at the end of the bridge will be Hwy 98. Turn left to go the campground. The Mid Bay Bridge is a toll bridge, it's $2.50 for a vehicle plus $2.50 for each additional axle. It'll save you from having to go into Fort Walton Beach and over on 98 from the other direction. The less you have to drive on Hyw 98, the better, it's busy.

Hey there, Just a reminder that the Mid Bay Bridge is a toll bridge, $2.50 per vehicle, $2.50 per additional axle. Have your cash ready, and lots of it, Destin area isn't cheap, that's why Florida loves tourists! (and why FL doesn't have a state income tax)
BTW, Did you all know that there's a Bass Pro Shop in Destin?

camp fires

I am bringing a portable fire pit and it does not handle real big fires. Smaller short pieces are best. For one evening, I'm guessing 30 pieces so times that by the number of nights we want a fire.

I am so sorry to hear that G - I do hope all is okay.....

I know the feeling of disappointment - I was so much looking forward to going and then looking forward to both Peter and I going to then none of us going was a huge lunch bag let down!!!

But as they say Life is so unpredictable - sometimes we just fool ourselves with our plans for escape

Perhaps G we could commiserate together

We will just have to be like the millions of people that watch the sports event from TV instead of the front row seats

So you lucky ones be sure to keep us all posted on all the fun.....

And hope all traveling arrive safely...

u.s. highway route 331 connects interstate 10 to 98 and comes out just a few miles east of the the campground road (scenic 30a)

it's a toll free bridge and pretty quick route to topsail from i-10 or other points north.

i'd suggest avoiding 98 from the west (pensacola) or the east. it is miles and miles of development, with stop/n/go crazy florida traffic.

U.S. Route 331

cheers

Tom, how considerate for you to remember that I'm a vegetarian!

I was SO looking forward to the Can Opener, but unfortunately, I will be cancelling as well. It's really tough clicking that "proceed with cancellation" button on Reserve America, but life doesn't always go as planned. Site 138 will be available and I hope someone can use it. It's a large corner lot and you can hear the ocean if you listen closely. Of course, you will have to risk the peril of being between Empresley and Nilesrob. But you couldn't ask for nicer neighbors.

2air, is hwy 98 from p`cola real bad now compared to say last year, weve been that way and i know its built up alot but distance wise its about 75 miles shorter and maybe 30 minutes less time. the time factor is not a big deal but with gas prices every little bit helps, but if you think it is better i-10 then thats the way. thanks for your input.

Sugarfoot, bummer you won't make it. Who's going to keep us separated?

On another note, I have some Thetford connectors available if anyone is interested. Turns out our new AS has the standard size connectors for the gray/black water drain.

Also, if anyone has 50 amp service for their AS, I have some power cord stuff that I no longer have a need for - just met me know and I'll bring with me.

While we're discussing trip options...

For those of you coming down through Auburn/Opelika once you get to Auburn/Opelika you should consider Hwy 29 S through Luverne, AL then about 10 miles south of Luverne pick up 331 the rest of the way down.

On a map, it might look good to take 431 South out of Auburn/Opelika instead and follow it into Florida, but this road has a bad reputation. So many deadly crashes have occurred on that road that it made it on a "top 10" deadly roads TV show a few years ago. Hwy 431 is a little better today as more and more of it goes four lane (there'll be construction on that road for years to come), but 29S is still the way to go IMO. Almost all two lane, but lightly travelled.

Hope everyone has a safe trip and a great time! See you Friday!

hi mpc

wow bon secour! you r waaaaaaaay down south!

looks like by google maps it would be 50 miles more to go up/then down for you.

i'm just a tourist, so maybe the locals will chime in...

from your place i'd likely just putter across 98, looks like a 100 miles vs 150 , so u are only 2-3 hours driving.

i came a 1000 miles and going from mobile over on 10 was much quicker than through pensacola, san destin, destin eastward....

and avoided all that development traffic, which seems to be about the same as last year long 98.

from your place it's probably easier to stick with the coastal road.

cheers

mpc,

I agree with 2air's feedback. I live in Panama City and drive periodically to/from Pensacola. As long as you are coming through the south side of Pensacola, 98 is the faster route to Destin. You do have to deal with more traffic and lights but you'll save time and miles from where you are coming from.

I'll be coming in Thursday - see you there.
