Area 33 - 2010

It's almost time!. Just a few weeks till we meet in Area 33 and the attendance list is full! Reserved dates: May 28 - 31

The basics: This rural spot has a group camp area with fire ring - wood included, great views, a babbling brook, 2 lovely porto-lets, 1 elect plug (for all to share) and a potable water spigot. If you want to shower you can drive a couple of miles down the road to the county park or swim in the creek (elk will be watching...) Camping is in a grassy but not level field with some sparse trees - no sand, gravel or asphalt slabs anywhere! Plan to boondock and arrive with full water tanks and empty dump tanks.

Parking takes some planning and may be somewhat challenging. Almost all sites require backing but there is always help if you need it and an audience if you don't Almost everyone will need to unhitch and park tow vehicles away from trailers. Camping fees are yet to be determined but will be approximately $16 per night (cash and check only). This fee extends to each tent pitched as well.

Area 33 - more farm-less park.
Hollenbeck Park located near Trout Lake WA
33 Mt Adams Rd.
Owners:Zoe and Gerald Wood

Directions: From Hwy 141 North bound - Mt Adams Hwy
  • Bear right at Chevron Station (road splits) in town and go about 1/4 mile across creek. fair warning - town is hard to recognize - a small market or two - that's all. This intersection is near the County campground
  • Left at 4-way intersection - look for sign to park, go about 300 yards down driveway
  • Right at sign to Hollenbeck park
  • Left at Green Gates - go down somewhat bumpy road - sometimes gravel
  • Drive down old runway 1900 ft (see hanger on left) -at the end of the runway cross irrigation ditch.
  • Camping to the left - we get the area with the fire pit and picnic table.. Please be careful about water spigots.
Just go ahead and park. One of the owners will come by on a small motorbike to collect. They do not take plastic! Checks OK.

Dumping: there is no dump station here - but the County park - seen on map quest link does have a dump station. You may dump "not too gray" water out of the way. Don’t ask - don’t tell.

This place is not in any phone book and the directions are kinda like a treasure hunt. The owners work at day jobs and do not advertise. Some portion of this land is a working farm.

Garbage: Must be packed out or taken to county collection station several miles away.

Connectivity: last year we had decent ATT cell service and some internet
Rain: Be prepared - bring a book.
Waiting list: Please let me know if you are interested in attending. This rally location has limited parking space and is currently full but anything is possible.
Cancellations: If you cannot make it please let me know - there is a waiting list to attend.

here's a mapquest map

Meals and activities:
Meal planning will commence on the next post.
Planed activities - none.
Suggested diversions:
There are great hiking trails, good biking, an ice cave and white water kayaking nearby if you are so inclined.
Kite flying - excellent conditions
Long walks
If you must bring aluminum foil...
Aluminum flyables exhibition on Saturday near 5 PM - all comers welcome.

We will have group meals on Friday and Saturday night as well as Sunday morning. You are however free to make your own plans if a better offer comes along.

We'll bring a couple of big stoves, cooking gear and the box of paper goods - but we want to be on holiday and would like some help. Assistance with scullery work and a brave person to organize a Sunday night dinner would be appreciated. Our cooking gear is available to use.

Facilities are limited and so we need to keep clean up really simple (no hot water). I'll edit this post with food additions as we go along - please check back here. Please sign up via PM.

Thursday night: Impromptu artichoke festival. Steamed chokes, wine and bread on the side. (BYO Wine). Gary says he can't subsist on just artichokes so he's grilling steak as well. Feel free to share the grill

Janet - Chokes for all & Lemon
Bluepearl - butter & bread
Jordandvm Berry cobbler and extra butter for the artichoke fest

Friday night: BYOM BBQ. Bring your own meat BBQ and/or a side dish to share. We will have a couple of smallish grills - if you need to borrow one. Keep in mind that not everyone needs to bring a side dish - consider grilling for someone else. You are responsible for your own drinks.

Janet - veggie bake
Jordandvm - Green Salad

----

Saturday night
: Mediterranean Pot Luck. Sign up - be brave! You are responsible for your own drinks.

Janet - Tabouli
jordandvm -Greek Salad
2Taylors - chicken soulvaki (chicken on a stick)
3Ms75Argosy - hummus and some sort of feta salad
Kintscher - hummus, pitas and veggies
L&C Woogie - Manicotti
JDL - Pie

----

Sunday B-fast: Eggs cooked to order, fresh corn tortillas and ham.
Good additions would be: Juice, coffee, grated cheddar, picante bits for eggs, salsa, hot baked cinnamon rolls (several pans), fruit. Please sign up via PM.

Janet - eggs, corn tortillas
Gary - ham
Kintscher - cheese and salsa
L&C Woogie - Fruit
2Taylors - coffee and juice
JDL - juice
Stefrobrts - cinnamon rolls
Jordandvm - cranberry/orangescones
LTD3 - frenchtoast casserole

----
Sunday dinner: Chili dinner - good additions would include corn bread (several), salad, chili toppings & dessert.

Giant pot 'O Chili - Driver2
Veggie chili - Janet
Stefrbrts - cheesy mashed taters
Jordandvm - Cornbread

Green Visor Crew - Loren
Scullery help - by appointment or conscription

Now it's open

Well all just talked with the powers that be and got the thread opened for posting.

I just wanted to say KITES, please bring your kites for a big kite fly off.
I'm sure the Boccie group will be tossing their balls around the site.
Also music will pop up spontaneously all weekend long.
Hopefully we will have many exercise sessions to help with the weight that will be added from the great food.
I also have a feeling that art lessons will be available for the artists in the group.
I also have it on good authority that there will be many bike tours happening all weekend.
The Zen group will be meditating on the mountain.
I just hope there will be something to do that weekend... HE He he....

Well I have plenty of kites. Every time I go to the beach I buy a new one. I finally found them all and I will have a few to share.

I will be bringing and most likely cooking to mine own food due to my diet restrictions.

Chili ??

Hi, last year the 11 quarts of chili con carne disappeared & seemed to be appreciated. I'd be happy to do that again for Sunday supper. I'll watch this thread over the next couple days & start cooking on Monday or Tuesday if there's any interest in my doing so (I pre-cook, then freeze it until needed). I can bring a variety of hot sauces & others would be welcome.

I won't do the whole supper. Maybe others can bring some veggies, salads, desserts, etc. Janet, I think you did the no-meat batch of chili & I don't know much about cooking that way. Would that work again?

We might give them a run for their money, we won't be able to head down until after work on Friday. I don't think it will be late enough to warrant flashlight use, though!

Hey! Maybe we'll surprise you and get in by sunset.... and then.... maybe not! And how is "arrived" being defined? Jacks down? Or is just hitting the dirt road count??

Can't wait... but still need to do some more plumbing repairs .... water pump install next!

I think we'll be coming in thursday afternoon. Is anyone else coming early? We have been toying with the idea of bringing a mess of artichokes again (if there's any interest).

Artichokes?

Yes...... we definitely need a good "butter delivery" system on site......and artichokes fit the bill! We will arrive Thursday pm also. Will try to take our time and do some camping a few days in advance on the way to. Another advantage of being retired!
We're still contemplating which trailer to bring and what food to contribute. Both may be a surprise.......after all, we are having "pot luck" dinners aren't we?
