We are perfecting and fine-tuning this wonderful bread recipe in the DO. Have one finishing up as I write.

Those of you who are up for the DO-with-briquettes way, you will have the luxury of having all the kinks worked out by the time we get to Alumalina.

I had said I wasn't going to post any more road loaves, but might have to post this one. It is just too purty not to share.

So fun!

Just about perfect.

This loaf is whole wheat with 2 tbsp coarse cornmeal grits in it, just for fun.

We are finding the oval loaves do better in our DO, which is the standard 12" rather than the deep. Spreading more horizontally than vertically, browning is more even.

Any okra lovers in this group? I'm thinking about bringing a big pot of spicy okra and tomatoes for the Saturday potluck.

Okra in limited amounts is wonderful.

I had a Mississippi auntie who thought they belonged in scrambled eggs.

Gang Maggie's got this bread thing looking like either she's cheating or has it figured out to the gram, grain, CC, ML, nano-meter whatever.

Now, who can make fresh hand churned butter for one of those slices of Maggie Bread?

Detect a bit of bread envy in this post?

Maggie, I know you don't cheat.

No, cheatin' is not my thing.

Really, the bread part is so crazy easy, you'll be amazed. I've been doing yeast breads over 40 years, and this is the easiest thing ever.

Doing this recipe with the charcoal has been a bit challenging, but it is very doable and so fun and easy to turn this out. It is different from traditional bread I have baked in the DO in the past. Just took some figuring and experimenting.

I was thinking about the butter thing, myself. Planned on bringing at least a pound or two, but help will be needed from others.

I thought some nice jams, marmalades, etc., would also be good. I think there's going to be a lot of bread tasting going on.

I have to say that I am a benefactor of Maggie's posts. She has inspired Karen to start baking breads in her DO and ooh-la-la!

At Wateree, you'll be about 30 miles (by crow) from Irmo - home of the Okra Strut https://www.facebook.com/IrmoOkraStrut
Okra is like shrimp... "There's, um, okra kebabs, okra creole, okra gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir fried. There's pineapple okra and lemon okra , coconut okra, pepper okra, okra soup, okra stew, okra salad, okra and potatoes, okra burger, okra sandwich... That's, that's about it."
Our deer like okra, too

spreads

OK folks, bread spreads- I work at a place that sells McCutcheons preserves They are a smaller company from Frederick MD. They have wonderful stuff like apple butter, orange marmalade, and "jams" like blueberry. I will get a case of mixed spreads to share with bread makers/tasters. Let me know what flavors to bring. I will let you decide, 12 flavors make a case. Pm me or list them on this thread. BTW anyone expecting NOT to gain weight at this rally is in denial. John

Nothing better than fresh, homemade bread.

All of those sound yummy.

I'll look for some good peach preserves, too.

Sorry, Gary, we will not be in Amish country for pb spread.
