Early arrivals

Do any other early arrivals want to plan a dinner out on Thurs night? Moosetags, can you suggest a place in the area?
Sounds like most of the entrees are southern so Cyndi will make peach cobbler made from an old South Carolina recipe over 150 years old. She makes it for special occasions, and this qualifies.
Also, do we have any numbers on people staying past Sunday?

We're heading down Monday early to Miami (maybe someplace else. Any suggestions?)-as a base camp to get into the Keys and Glades by car.

Restaurant Recommendations in Santa Rosa Beach:

1. The Red Bar (Picalo's) in Grayton Beach. Great food and a lot of it at a reasonable price. Very eclectic atmosphere; the bar is a locals hang-out. When available, the have the BEST crab cakes in the Galaxie.

2. The Blue Bar (331 Cafe) on the Choctawhatchee Bay and US 331. Owned and run by the same guy as the Red Bar in Grayton. Similar menu plus a sushi bar. The also have the crab cakes when the Red Bar doesn't.

3. McGuire's in Destin on US 98 at the foot of the bridge. Super hamburgers, steaks, and authentic boxties (don't ask, just order them). There are only two McGuire's; the original one is in Pensacola. They have microbrews and a really neat atmosphere. If you stay late, you can kiss the moose (don't ask about that either). One word of caution, pay full attention when you visit the rest room.

There are plenty of other places to eat. All of the regular fare is around.

". . .as the northerners will be coming down and the sites in January will be gone in a snap. . ." Well, here's a pair of northeners thinking about heading south to open a few cans with y'all... Actually, Missouri is pretty much mixed north and south, so we can claim any allegiance we choose Knowing how long winter can stretch, your rally sounds like a great soak in the sun before we settle in for a season of cabin fever. What sites are still open in your rally area and which ones seem best right now? Seafood anythings suits us fine, and we'll cook 'em up or add to the stew, as needed. We'll even toss out furnishings along the road--a la wagons west style--but we'll arrive with wine on board Leaning toward joining you, but still undecided , ~G

Great

That sounds great. There are still a few out there but as you said,They will be snatched up by January most likely. They do though keep a few open for passerbys.
Here are the sites that are left open. Those are the one in the darker blue on top.

look at this link...

http://www.reserveamerica.com/fl/Top...mpgroundMap.do

arriving jan 4 for 4 days...

their are 13-14 sites at the top of the list in light blue...

101, 103, 105, 114, 115, 116, 121, 123, 124 ,125, 128, 129, 131 and 134.

then move your mouse pointer over the site on the map and 'click'...

the dates available for each site listed above will appear...

if you want different dates, simple retype in the date box...on the left.

If you cannot get it on-line, the phone number at the park is 850-267-0299.

Site #

I think site #134 would be a good one to get into. it is straight across the street from Philgobie and is about the only place to be close to the group.

Found this video of topsail.it is not much but I guess it gives you an idea of what the path to the beach will be.

Well, this thread has gotten so long that I can't keep up any longer. But, I thought y'all would get a kick outta this.

Susan and I are in Ft. Walton for the holiday and we thought we would ride out to Topsail and Henderson State parks to have a look-see. Both parks are great. Henderson is very close to the sugar-sand white beaches. But Topsail is by far the nicer of the two.

The pool is closed at the moment at Topsail for some reason. BUT, the pond just next to it also closed. Seems there's a warning to stay out of it for fear of the 'gators coming after you. Not to worry, tho, this pond is so small that you should easily be able to see the 'gators before they see you.

Jim

Gators

Yea...The first time we ever camped there we were next to that small pond and when I seen the sign I thought it was just to funny.for such a small pond. But it is true though. You dont want to go near there.Mostly with your dog.

Hope they open the pool. I don't do wild water. You guys got gators, and jelly fish and sharks and sting rays, and things on the beach I can only wonder at, oh my. We may have to bring kiddie pools.

I was driving along Aligator Alley and stopped at the rest stop. Grabbed my camera and went down to the water to take pictures of those neat thick stemmed yellow flowers. I got in real low and close. When I looked at the pictures on my computer I saw that a gator was swimming nearby and watching me. They ought to stop you at the Florida line and hand out warnings. Silly woman from Chicago Illinois what do I know of your beasties? I thought gators lie in the sun and bask like at the zoo and barely move but blink.

gators in Fla blend in well to the scenery. I have seen some on golf courses that looked fake...until they get up and trot...fast as a horse!
