Yet another way to check propane tank level
I tried the Mopeka gauges. They are quite a challenge with aluminum tanks. I’m sure several of you are happy with them, but I ended up losing them along the road. So it occurred to me that, if I tap the tank with the safety chain hook, the sound is different based on the level of the propane. So I downloaded a frequency analyzer app to my iPhone and sure enough it works. It seems counterintuitive, but a fuller tank resonates at a lower frequency.
So far, I’ve observed that a full 10 gallon aluminum tank resonates at about 377 hz, while a tank that’s down to 1.1 gallons resonates at 592 hz. I’m sure that some of you with perfect pitch can easily tell the level with just one tap, but, being entirely left brained, I have to see the numbers.
I’m still gathering calibration data, but I’m liking the new method. All I need is the phone and a quick tap.

I have a simple procedure…. When the indicator turns red (indicating the selected tank is empty and to switch the regulator-valve to the other tank)….. at the end of that trip I have the empty tank refilled.
Using that method, I’ve never run out of propane.

I’m not sure if anyone is interested, but I’ve found that, with a little practice, this method does indeed work. For my rig with 10 gallon aluminum tanks, striking with the hook for the safety chain..
370 hz is full
570 hz is empty
In between, 470 hz is about 1/2.
There is a bit of variation with temperature, but these are good enough for me.
Any time I start getting over 500 hz, I know that tank is low.

I just pour a bit of warm water down the side of the aluminum tank. Then run my hand down the side. Tank warms up quickly where there is no propane. Do it in the morning before the sun warms up the tank. Otherwise, I follow Boxite’s technique.

I used the Mopeka for awhile, but they aren’t very dependable. If I know I’m going to be in really cold weather, I just take my extra tank. I always then have two full tanks in cold weather. An extra tank isn’t that expensive.

I too do not have that perceived dilemma.
