Worthington lp tanks
Here is question about getting the lp tanks recertified. I have two 40 lb. Worthington lp tanks that need to be refitted with OPD valves. I took them to my local gas company and they said they would refit the tanks with the new valves and certify them for 5 years, but this was the last time the tanks could be recertified since they were recertified 2 times before. I left without having the tanks worked on thinking what good is having to pay to have the valves replaced if I can use the tanks only a another 5 years. From what I can tell one tank is original to the trailer built in 1987, the other one has factory date stamped on it 1977. I was under the impression that alum. tanks could be used indefinitely. What is the is the real deal?

Leaky29,
Try another propane dealer, this site states that the tanks can be recertified for an additional 5 years indefinately: http://rvbasics.com/techtips/propanevalves.html
or at least until the tank is determined to be unsafe.

Hi LEAKY29--I have two 30lb Worthington aluminum tanks with originial dates of 3-73. Had original certification in 7-93. Installed OPV and recertified one tank 9-99, the other 6-00. Recertified both tanks (which already had OPV) 8-05, so they are good till 8-10. Serviceman told me that as long as the tanks didn't leak, or have serious dings, or other apparent distress, they could be recertified every 5-years.--Frank S

Hi LEAKY29--Forgot to mention. When OPV's were installed on my tanks I paid about $18 each which included the recertification, plus a propane fill. When I recertified in 8-05 I was only charged for propane for the empty tank, and a top off for the partially filled tank.--Frank S

Can someone tell me what the weight difference is between the Worthington 30lb tank and a steel 30lb tank?
Thanks,
Al
