Up-dating Tanks
I have 2 aluminum tanks that need to be updated. They were the originals from my 1976, 31' Soverign. I can't find anyone in my area that will do the work, (3 LP distributers, and one large camper outlet). Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm in the Kingston New York area and will take them to the nearest place someone can suggest. Thank's

Hi DHunter,
Welcome to the forums!
I had one set redone at a welding gas place. IIRC it was National Welders. The other set was done at an independant gas/oil dealer that is no longer in business. For the independant I had to order the valves, but they did the cerification and installed the valves for me.

I am not familiar with your region of the country, but if you happen to have an Airstream dealer in your region who is Vintage friendly, they may be your best source for assistance. When I had trouble locating a vendor willing to re-certify my '78 Minuet's Worthington tanks, Ace Fogdall RV was able to handle the new valves/re-certification as part of my annual maintenance/service visit.
Good luck in your search!
Kevin

I have 2 30 pounders that have not been updated, they are steel. One ran out this weekend and it seems like a good time to upgrade to aluminum tanks. where can I get the best price???

Do a forum search for Worthington tanks. Best I remember, Vintage Trailer Supply had the best prices.

OPD Valves?
By update, do you mean replace the old valves with the newer OPD valves? I replaced the valves in two 20lb tanks for my Weber gas grill. I got the valves online and then installed them myself. It wasn't easy getting the old ones out; they're torqued in there pretty tightly and it's hard to hold the bottles still, but I chucked a steel rod into a vise and then slid the tank shield holes through this rod and turned the valve with a large wrench with extension bar. I had to basically turn the valve a partial turn, then pull the tank off the rod and put it on 180 from how it was before and then wrench the valve some more. Took several iterations of this before the valve was loose enough to keep the tank "chucked" in one place and get the old one out. I then just cleaned up the threads and put the new valves in using thread tape. Took them to the LP place, filled them up, then weighed them on a digital bathroom scale certified to the tenth of a pound. Waited two weeks and then weighed them again. They were identical. Did the soapy water test around the top, no bubbles. Been fine for three years now.

Yes, they lack the OPD valve. I could upgrade the ones I have, but I want to go with the aluminum tanks. More to polish!

I had mine done by a local gas distributer . They had to order the valves , when they came in I brought the tanks in and they changed the valves , filled the tanks , and recertified, total $92.00.As someone said before , try a gas company that handles all types of gas , i.e. , welding , medical , propane , they might be more willing . Airstream dealers in NY ,Paterson 914-898-9400 , Harpersville , 607-693-4295 . Good luck

DHunter , another lead for you . F.W.Webb is a large pluming supply house . They are also distributors of Worthington Tanks , they can probably get you the OPD valves and possibly recertify . There's one in Albany and one in Queensbury . Hope this helps

Do check to make sure that you get new valves with the proper dip tube length. This is sometimes stamped on the tank colar "DT=xx" - some propane folks don't check too carefully and install the wrong valves. Aluminum tanks are taller than steel of same capacity so have longer DT length valves.

I really appreciate the suggestions. I've tried all of the earlier suggestions and will start on the new ones tommorow. I did find a propane re-fill center that thought the valve requirement was needed only if the re-filler didn't know what he was doing. He said he could help me. A funny thing, he said that it was against the law to transport LP tanks over a bridge without an approved bracket hold down?? You could take them down the road but not over a bridge. Ah, NY State! I do want to do the correct thing and will keep looking. I'll let you know.
