propane tank warning

I found this on another site and thought it was worth passing on, especially if you ever exchange tanks. Also a caution about using dishwashing detergent to check for propane leaks as most of them contain ammonia.

That's interesting and a good reason to own your own propane cylinders. Thanks for the info.

As to ammonia in dishwashing liquid... I wanted to apply my WBCCI numbers using signage cling film and they suggest spraying DW liquid under the film to assist in positioning. Not wanting to use anything ammoniated on the freshly polished aluminum, I called the (800) hotline at P&G and asked, specifically, "Does DAWN liquid have any ammonia?" The person was off line for quite a while researching and returned with a fairly emphatic, "NO."

I had assumed "yes," as would most of us, but just as there is Windex (yes) and Glass Plus (no), there must be different formulations for different brands.

Holy cow!

Actually, if somebody wants propane and has a suspect-looking cylinder for whatever reason, it is left up to the (licensed) filler to decide whether to fill it or not. Usually this involves a damaged or corroded cylinder body, but this story just adds to the list.

I guess the real question from my persective is whether not just to refuse to fill the cylinder, but also to call the cops. (I have zero tolerance for meth.)

Although it is possible that these contaminated bottles could be exchanged at a retail outlet it would be unlikely and if they did I think the inspectors at the propane facilities that fill them would catch it upon inspection. And as mentioned on Urban Legends Reference Pages the drug criminals need the cylinders to be empty of propane so they would probably not be trading them in for full ones.
