Propane Tank Cover Replacement
We have a 2004 Airstream Safari SS. We lost the lid to our propane tank cover on the highway due to high winds. Ripped right off. Can the lid be replaced or do we need to buy the entire cover? If so, where or through which website? Anyone selling a used tank cover out there? We will be in the Arizona area for a couple of months.

Woodland Airstream parts dept, is good, a little pricey, but you can look up product on their website. Another good site is Airstream Trailer Parts.com. They have a lot of parts and a good website.

You may want to consider a replacement from AirBoardShop. It is higher and allows you to store a few handy items when used with the storage shelf.

Thanks! I found the lid and hardware at AirstreamTrailerParts.com. Problem solved.

Make sure that when you put the new lid on that the cover is facing the proper direction - it should be pushed closed when traveling down the highway, not pulled open.
I added a lightweight chain to the inside of the lid to keep it from opening too far when we're working in the propane area. This keeps the lid from being over stressed when it's left open.

We actually ditched our 30lb tanks as we never ran them dry. We use two standard 5 gal bbq tanks and bought a black plastic cover. Actually I like the black look anyway. I cut a lot of weight off directly above the hitch. I’m happy with the results

When the latch on our cover failed (the latch itself was fine, the latch ripped out of the plastic cover) we were at JC for other service. We bought a replacement cover and had the tech put 2 strips of aluminum on the inside of the cover. One to reinforce the hinge and one to reinforce the latch attachment. Now those are riveted through the plastic into metal, not just riveted to the plastic lid itself. We later added a keeper chain ourselves. Rivets attached to rather thin plastic-destined to fail.

I think that's a great idea for anyone who doesn't use a lot of propane.
Added bonus you no longer need to get the propane cylinders re-certified, just go to an exchange place when they get close to that age.

And those big tanks are heavy!
Great idea.

RE: Propane Tank Cover Replacement -- An Alternative
There is also an alternative to replacing the cover, and that is to go with Aluminum LP Tanks and have them polished to compliment your Airstream. There is a modest weight savings over the steel tanks and you don't have a cover to worry about. I have 40-pound tanks on my 1964 Overlander Land Yacht International, and 20-pound tanks on my 1978 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre (they are painted on the Argosy and came that way from the factory).
