Propane Refills at Costco
I need some tanks filled and was trying to figure out the best and cheapest place to do this. My local gas company that fills my home tank wants like $40 to fill a 30lb bottle. Costco wants like $16 to fill one. I think I will be joining Costco. I probably have enough tanks between grill bottles and Airstream bottles to pay for the $55 club membership. I have called other gas companies and they all want an arm and a leg to fill tanks. At $40 per fill I would be very miserly with my gas use. That is almost $6/gal.

Try ACE hardware. I had one 20 lb and one 30 lb tank filled for $38 total.

I just read this and thought that is great! Unfortunately not all Costco's do that. Our nearby one doesn't think any in the Atlanta area will do that. Does any body know differently?
We have been getting ours filled at U-Haul. They sell by the gallon based on how much the tank will take.

I use U-Haul also, their rates are fair and I don't have to pay a club membership. At the U-Haul I use they even allow me to pay right there at the pump via a portable scanner. I find their rates are adjusted to reflect current market prices for our area.

Our local Costco here in Canada wouldn't fill my 30# alum trailer bottle - they said they would only fill 20# ""BBQ" bottles as theory called them. Spoke with the the manager and he confirmed what the guy had told me!

The $40.00 does sound high. I just filled a 30 lb tank for $22.00 plus tax at a propane dealer.

Unfortunately my Costco doesn't sell propane. I used to use U-Haul, until the Ace Hardware near where my trailer is stored installed a propane fill station in the parking lot. It was a little over $20 to fill a 30-lb tank in February.

We use propane for our house so I just leave my empty trailer and BBQ tanks out next to my big tank for the delivery truck. He fills them when he fills the big tank. No extra charges and I pay the same bulk rate as for my home tank.
Didn't know Costco sold propane, but the nearest one to us is 30 miles away. Good to know if I'm on a trip though and need propane.

Interesting - I guess it is just the local manager's decision only to deal with 20# bottles at Costco here in Burlington.
I did discover from a Can. Govt website that the 30# Alum bottles on our trailer (we bought it used in Ohio) are not supposed to be filled here in Canada. They don't bear the correct Canadian markings - only DOT stamp.
Luckily - so far - our Can Tire store will fill them! It usually wouldn't be a problem anyway as our AS is used mostly in the US.

It pays to shop around, I just checked the price at Uhaul in Bozeman Montana and it's $4.79 a gallon. I also checked the price at Farmers Union Trading in Columbus MT near my house and the price is $1.79.....?

Hello perry114:
I formally exchanged tanks with the Costco in my neighborhood. They don't fill propane tanks, they only exchange them. I took in my empty tank and they sold me a refilled tank. Costco has a supplier that does this refilling operation for them. I thought I was getting a good deal until I discovered their tanks were only a quarter full.
I have my tanks filled at a large suppliers yard. I don't know what they are currently charging but it has always seemed inexpensive to me.
Just for fun I'll relate an experience I had with a tenant. He had passed away and his widow was cleaning out the stuff he had collected and stored in the garage. She didn't know what to do with the 40 (rusted, old style valve) full propane tanks. Naturally, I was upset with the potential bomb stored in my garage.
I talked with Costco and they said sure they would take them and I trucked them to their store. Their supplier now has replaced the valves and re-painted them. (Costco will take an old style valve, and the exchange tank you will receive in return will have the new style valve at no additional charge to you).
What a relief to get them out of my garage!
