LP Alarm when using hot water heater

I have a 2019 28’ flying cloud, rear twin (I took delivery in July of 2018).

The LP detector is in the front, near the sofa and backs up to the hot water heater compartment which is under the sofa. Any time I set the water heater to gas, within 10-15 minutes, the alarm sounds.

I had someone check for an LP gas leak at the tanks or the lines and there was no leak. When the monitor device was lowered into the under seat compartment, it triggered big time.

After removing the sofa cushions and the cover and letting it air out, we tried to recreate the event again. This time the alarm did not sound - after several hours of the hatch being open, the monitor device measured normal.

The alarm also sounds when I am towing the trailer and have the fridge on LP. However, when I remove the cushion and leave the hatch open while traveling - no alarm.

The alarm is not triggered when using the furnace or the fridge (when stationary).

Any ideas on what could be triggering the alarm?

Detector may be defective? Suggest buying a new one ASAP. A simple way to reduce variables IMO.

Darren at My RV Works demonstrates three tests in this video for the propane system specifically the regulator operation. But at 20:30 in the video he shows how this same test setup tests for system leaks when nothing is open. Tank valve closed, all appliances off and the tests looks for a system leak. It will look at the entire propane delivery system. Not just places where the sniffer is sniffing. doesn't show where the leak is, just holds pressure or leaks. It's a simple test if you have the test rig. A RV tech or shop should have this test rig.

The device you are talking about is an LP Leak but also a CO detector. The build up of Carbon Monoxide in the water heater area is likely the cause of the Alarm. The water heater might need to be serviced making sure there is not a ventilation/exhaust leak. This should but a closed system with all the combustion side gases being vented outside the trailer but there might be a bad seal or something inside the vent preventing proper exhaust of the gases.

I have a 2019 FC 30 and after two years the alarm started going off during the night. Replaced the detector under warranty and no problem since. Good luck. PS I bought a sniffer and found no issue with connections or appliances.

The device you are talking about is an LP Leak but also a CO detector.

You might want to check this statement. I don't believe a CO detector and a gas detector can be in the same unit. One issue is that a gas detector needs to be low in your space (propane/methane etc are heavy) and a CO, a lighter element, detector needs to be higher (at head level).

X2. OP: Replace the detector. Mine has never gone off except when someone bumped the stove knobs without lighting or when we applied spray sunscreen in the trailer (the LP detector HATES spray sunscreen). - Brad

I'm watching and awaiting further details. I just checked mine and it states on it LP Gas Detector. Nothing else.

Thanks everyone! Today when the RV technician was here installing my easy start, I also had them check my LP alarm issue. Of course as these things go - I was NOT able to recreate the situation and the water heater worked beautifully on gas - no alarm, no leaks of any kind.

Maybe it just needed to be re-set? And/or the enclosed area under the sofa needed to be aired out.

At this time, no concrete resolution.
