Issue with Camco Catalytic Wave heater and LP?

I was looking on Amazon for the Camco Wave 6 cat heater and in one of the reviews http://tinyurl.com/y8h87quv a reviewer came back to do a update.

In his/her update they started having issues with the heater and upon calling camco it was determined that there is now a additive put in LP that causes the cat to become unusable over time.

has anyone else had this issue and what is the new additive put in LP that is detrimental to the cats.

might be time to look at the radiant empire heaters vs the wave heaters??

might need to make a call to campco or whom ever the manf is to find out what is going on with this issue.

was going to call Campco this evening and see they are located in Greensboro NC. which is right up the road from me. maybe tomorrow.

Propane or LPG sold for automotive/forklift use sometimes has additives to make it burn hotter in vehicle engines so it has combustion properties closer to those of gasoline. Automotive-use propane is typically fed to the engine as a liquid (the system draws off the bottom of the cylinder, not the top of it).

Unlike propane used in RVs that is drawn from the top of the cylinder and fed to the appliances as a vapor. The vaporized LPG additives can coat the heater elements and interfere with the catalytic process.

Be careful where you buy propane and make sure you're not buying automotive-use LPG that contains additives like CGX-4 or Pro-2000 or Chemtane-V.

Well i called camco and spoke with guy, Rick, in technical services and was asking him about the oil in LP issues of which he was aware.

Apparently it happens more in areas west of the Mississippi River than east of the "big muddy". I asked what it was and if they, camco, done anything to combat it or what the issues was, he did not know and they have not done any changes to the heater to help combat this issue.

when doing some more digging or if you do a google search on "oil in LP" there is lots of stuff about it. One heater manf the buddy heaters, recommend a filter be used when changing from small to large tanks. http://tinyurl.com/y8laywmh

Some folks on the rv.net forum were suggesting the oil comes from the hose not the tank.

I wonder is something like the Mr heater filter would help with the thermal wave pad issue..

maybe some sorta oil/air filter like used on air powered tools in shops.

not sure what to do.. they are the only heaters to work at high sea level locations.

I would guess most propane sold at places like tractor supply or the local hardware store is not automotive use LP.. I have not seen info at the place i get my tank filled indicating the LP was for or not for automotive use.

My guess is they get lp gas from specialty supply service for fork truck, auto use.

I get mine at U-Haul most of the time, and U-Haul has two different propane pricing structures, one for vehicular use and one for portable cylinders, with vehicular being cheaper. It's all the same propane fed from the same storage tank, just at two different prices per gallon. So I'm guessing that propane from U-Haul does contain the additives. But since I don't have a propane-fueled catalytic heater to get messed up by the additives, it's a non-issue for me.
