How much fuel would a propane converted Honda EU2200 use

I'm trying to figure out if a propane converted Honda EU2200 generator would use a significant amount of the Nest propane that I'd normally use for water heating or cooking but I'm concerned that my analysis is skewed.

If propane requires about 38% more fuel to match gasoline's BTU output and the Honda will run approximately 5.5 hours (using the average run time from Honda) on .95 gallons then the propane converted generator would burn approximately 1.3 gallons of propane over the same period of time.
The Nest 20lb. propane tank holds approximately 4.7 gallons if full, but 80% is the nominal fill or 3.76 gallons.
Then the propane tank would be emptied after about 15.75 hours.
The same time with gasoline would have required about 2.86 gallons minus .95 in the tank or an additional 1.91 gallons or a 2 gallon gas can.

With either fuel, the better questions might be [IMO]:

-- how/where can I store extra fuel?
-- how easily can I re-fill the fuel container?

Your propane tank is a standard 20-lb. BBQ tank, isn't it? These are available almost everywhere, and are safer/easier to transport and store than a gas can IMO.

The Honda 2200 running on propane will be the next gen we buy, hands down. Also incredibly useful at home for emergencies, and for helping out family and friends in hurricanes, blizzards, etc.. Most households already have a BBQ tank available somewhere, so this adds to the portability of the 2200 -- you often do not need to bring along fuel for it.

We have a propane-fired Yamaha 1000 gen for keeping the batteries charged and fridge running. [not the A/C obviously] One of the best tools I ever bought.

Yours is an easy choice IMO.

Happy trails,

No solid figures, (we don't fret the small stuff).

When we had AGM's we ran the Honda about 1.5hrs every day on eco mode in the morning while making breakfast.
It typically lasted for an entire 14 day stay at the lake, (no water, no hook-ups.)

Our Champion 3400 Dual will run between 14 and 16 hours on a 20# LP tank in eco mode (we never run the AC) Since we also have about 380w of solar a 20# will last the entire summer (June thru Sept)

Just bought and configured the Honda Gen to LP

Our new Honda 2200i arrived on Friday and the LP conversion from Hutch Mountain arrived a few days earlier.

Hutch Mountain's photos and instructions are great. So, is the video by David from Fate Unbound

After a mere 40 minutes (because I was going slowly) I had the Honda running on a BBQ tank.

I had installed the Easy Start on both AC units a few weekends ago, and am eager to see how the Honda handles at least one of them.

I want to run the genset on the AS low pressure line. From what I understand, you still need to low pressure regulator (the large circular one) to reduce the pressure still before connecting it to the genset.

So I just ordered the ten foot length of hose and the 1/4 to 3/8 make quick release. The AS line has a 1/4 fitting for gas grills, etc. I also got the male and female quick release fittings to easily disconnect the high and low pressure regulators from the BBQ tank. Otherwise, it is wrench time every time you want to switch back to a BBQ tank from the AS house line.

Be sure to fill the Honda genset with oil!!

Four pulls on the handle to get it lit. Very pleased at the quiet running. The exhaust smells like a stove exhaust. Nothing more.

Although I will be running it for the AC and will be around when I do, I went ahead and bought the aftermarket sheet metal cover for the handle and a hardened square-link chain. As quoted on another post, the genset gives theives the power they need to operate their grinders or electric hacksaws to make off with your generator.

Planning to use the house tanks (40# each) and not the BBQ tank.

Quick question: Does the generator lope a little with no load in Eco mode? I just did the same conversion and mine stumbles a little. I'm at 950 ft elevation.

Here's a link to one of the best sites that addresses propane vs gasoline consumption. It's very informative.

Your 20 pound propane tank has a 25 pound capacity, since it is required to not be filled more then 80% and the companies were actually forced to sell propane tanks by the 80% they could be filled with. This means that if you get it "filled" it should have 20 pounds/4.7 gallons in it.

Of course if you do the tank exchange, most of those places only give you 15 pounds and hope you don't notice and/or know any better.

Buy by the Gallon not the pound...we use CW/Gander, they fill to the bleed valve and it's right around the corner.
Never exchange it's a rip-off.👎

I “exchange” when my portable tanks are out of inspection-date. I then “peruse” the ones available on the rack and insist on the latest inspected.

I work in a grocery store in my retirement job and I do a lot of tank exchanges. I typically inform the customers that they would be better off buying their own tank and filling, especially at a provider that charges by the gallon. I also point out to the that the 20 lb tanks we sell are only filled to 15 lbs. Cost is $19.99-$21.00 for 20# tank exchanges in the St. Louis metro area. The other rip off is the places that charge you by weight. Unless your tank is empty, you are paying again for any propane left in your tank.

I've ran our Honda 2200i full steam ahead with an air conditioner going the whole time and a 20 lbs. bottle lasted 12 hours.

Thank you - that answers my concern about using propane to run a generator - especially if you only have one 20lb tank like the Nest.

Just finished the installing 2 (two) MicroAir soft-start units on my FC25. One is a 13.5K & the other a 15K BTU Dometic Penguin II.

I have a the Genconnex Honda EU2000, couple of years old. After the MicroAir's 'learning cycles' I tested the generator on both units (one at a time) from ECO mode. As expected, had a MicroAir on my previous A/S, both units worked just fine.

Sometimes I locate the generator at the rear of our A/S and I wanted to see if I could use 30' of hose with the 2000 from my tanks. Again both a/c units ran fine from ECO mode. I was hooked up to the low pressure side with no other regulator.

I used a 3/8" hose and quick connects. I wasn't sure if the 1/4" hook-up would give me the volume needed. I had already installed a 3/8" quick connect (see photo) on the Airstream so I can hook-up to my house propane and run the furnace in the winter, we live in central Texas.

Anyway, you should have no problem running your a/c from the EU2200.

Whoops, Let me see if I can rotate the image! No luck, I'll have to figure out how to upload images so they post in proper orientation.

I always wondered about this -- whether you could feed propane to the trailer from another source. I guess the line coming from your house is already reduced in pressure?

Thanks,

Good tink'n, we use a pancake for the Honda, but the home BQ is about to go out.😂

Thanks,
Been doing it for 15 years, makes winterizing pretty easy. I just make sure to shut off both tanks.

I think the Airstream quick connect has a back-check valve but I did not research that. I did have the line from my house to the trailer adapted to the male Airstream Q.C. and it did not work.

To be honest, I'm not sure what would happen if you leave one open I've been diligent enough to shut them, so far.
