Two questions:

1) what year models were the horizontal LPG bottles used on the "Limited" trailer models and

2) are the requirements for the OPD's vertical bottles the same for the horizontal bottles?

From the sales brochure's I have it appears the horizontal bottles were first used in 1988 and on all limited until 96 or 97. It is my understanding the valve on the horizontal tank is different than a vertical tank and does not require replacement.

I may have the wrong source on this but I thought that Airstream was producing a label that you can request, that you put on your horizontal tanks. It basically states that the tank is exempt from having to have OPD valves. If filling becomes an issue, you might check with them about these stickers. My other thought about a source for these stickers might be the Good Sam club. I know someone was producing these.

Thanks guys, I also had heard that in one of the Blue Berets an article on the OPD valves stated you could contact the factory and get new tanks and valves for about $500 plus shipping.

I have two horizontally mounted bottles on my limited. Some refill stations are reluctant to fill them so I carry the page of the DOT reg which exempts them. Most stations know about the exemption as there are no OPD devices for these bottles. I have never had anyone refuse to fill them after showing them the exemption. Most propane dealers have this reg and will be happy to copy the page for you.

Airstream will sell you new tanks but $500 seems like a lot to avoid the occasional necessity to educate the filler, especially if you have perfectly good tanks. The regulation is DOT 58-12 Par 2.3.1.5 exception No. 2

It's never been really clear to me what to say about the detachable horizontal tanks. It is true that the horizontal tanks on motorhomes don't need OPDs. However, the detachable tanks I have dealt with are filled in the vertical position, not the horizontal. All have had OPDs.

Big Jimmy is correct. I typed up the above, put it on a label and attached it to my tanks. I have never had a problem getting them refilled. I was going to post the label but I can't seem to do a paste here.

I got stickers to put on my detachable horizontal tanks for my '88 Argosy. I have had three places refuse to fill my tanks - even with the stickers. I was cautioned against trying to use OPD valves in my tanks because of the way the baffles are inside the tank. New valves are not supposed to open and let the proper flow of gas out. Got this info from NPGA.

Horizontal bottles were used in 1999 - my Classic Limited has them. Obtained the labels last time we visited Jackson Center two years ago. Have not had any difficulty getting them refilled even though I haven't applied the labels yet. The big propane sellers will fill the horizontal bottles at a flat rate, ranging from 16 to 20 dollars, as they are fork lift bottles.

I was at Jackson Center last summer and they had the lables FREE for the taking. I made 2 up on my computer and carry the DOT letter just in case. I lay them down to fill and have never had a problem filling.

Hi guys and gals -

Tried finding the DOT reg mentioned in an earlier post. Can't find it even with the reg # and all details off the DOT web site. Could those of you that have the reg possibly post it so that I could recreate a label that I can affix to my horizontal bottles.

Tried to google the reg as well, and no luck there either. Sigh.

I printed it on heavy glossy photo paper, sprayed it with krylon clear Walmart), several coats and glued it to the tanks. I need to replace mine soon but they have been on for several years.

Thanks a BUNCH for the label info. Appreciate it very much! Printed your label for myself and will get it done up right and attached to my tanks. Might even go and get some printed up proper and make them available.... Any takers?

Still need to get a copy of the full reg. so I can show chapter and verse if need be. Any idea on a web page where the text is available - anyone?

So you still have to take the tank off to get it filled. What about the big tanks in some MH. Can larger 100# tanks be filled in place?

Motorhome propane tanks are filled in place. This is the blurb that I carry with me, never had to use it, even the folks in North Carolina can read and understand the label. This came from the NPGA site.
