Furnace flame erratic...

See previous post in this category.

Following replacement of the circuit board, the furnace worked well for several nights, then last night it failed to ignite several times, tho it would start sometimes after cycling the thermostat.

The flame sounded very ragged and erratic.

Today I took the burner assy out and found this:

Fortunately, due to previous issue, I had a spare burner on hand:

Works and sounds better. Back in business.

My advice: if your unit is more than 15-20 years old, buy a spare burner for $30 or so.

Don't have a problem .... yet .... but just wondering, is it a major task to get at the burner to inspect / replace it ?

My first time...took me about an hour. The guy at the RV center explained how to do it.

1. Shut off the gas!
2. Remove the flue tube. Loosen wing nut and just pull it out. May take some wiggling and swearing.
3. Disconnect the gas line that comes in from the side.
4. Look all the way back where the burner goes thru the back wall. There are 3 screws there, 2 at 2 and 3 o'clock and one at about 8 o'clock. There is also a small screw on mine that holds the cover on the fan, which is part of the assembly that comes out. You'll need a 6-8 in 1/4 in hex driver extension with a magnetic 1/4 in socket for this part.
5. Reach underneath and unplug the red igniter wire.
6. Remover the burner assembly. Again with the wiggling and swearing. It all comes out as a unit. There will be other wires to disconnect.
7. When you have the whole assembly in your hand, the rest is obvious.

I looked all over for some guidance on this and was not able to find a step by step, so this is for you and and one else who needs it.

Good luck!

Tom
