Forklift tanks deliver propane as a liquid to the forklift engine. RV tanks deliver propane to the stove and heater as a gas. They also are mounted differently. You may be able to modify them, but I would think it would be cheaper to just get new tanks.

Some Forklift tanks have the vapor ports on them too...But they are not designed for RV use, they won't fit the racks properly, you would have to adapt the fittings to your AS...etc, etc. Why did you want to use forlift tanks? The ones I have seen cost more than the regular tanks

They do look like beer kegs and some have nifty guages. But, most are designed to be used horizontally, so if they are vertical, the ports will not work correctly. You may have liquid coming out of a vapor port if a horizontal tank is used vertical and vice versa.

I started down this road myself. Forklift tanks can be had cheep if you know the right people. But as stated above, the conversion process to make the tanks work is not easy and you will have problems with the over fill valves too. Also, some shops will not want to touch them when refill time comes since they are non-standard. Pick does have a good point on the cool factor though....

Yep. From the factory. Horizontally mounted Worthington aluminum propane tanks. That's what's under the cone-shaped fiberglass hood on the tongue. Two of 'em. 40 pounders with straight valves. OPD not required. There's several threads here about them. I don't see why a horizontal forklift tank wouldn't work on an Airstream, as long as the fittings would work. The only way I can get them filled at anyplace that's not a pro-LP place is by explaining that they're no different than forklift tanks... and most of those places have filled forklift tanks at one time or another. As a matter of fact, Airstream and other MoHos use horizontally mounted LP tanks as well, and they fill them without comment. It's just that these are removeable that give's 'em fits.

Depends on the regulator. Many of them do not want to see liquid propane. Hopefully, Nick Crowhurst will catch this thread as he he has commented in the past about a particular issue with regs seeing LPG instead of gaseous.

The forklift tank idea was attractive because I spotted a couple of nice sized aluminum ones on E-bay for $50.
