Disconnecting one propane tank for portable grill

My Weber portable grill has a long hose with a screw on attachment to hook it directly to a propane tank.

Rather than modify the grill for use with the low pressure line, I would rather just attach it to one of my two propane tanks and let the hose hang down and exit below in the open part of the propane compartment that surrounds the two tanks (2020 25' GT).

Is there any reason I cannot simply disconnect one of my tanks and do this?

Would I need to do anything with the switching valve?

I have observed that propane leaks out of the disconnected hose to the trailer switchover valve when it is removed from the tank. It may stop after the pressurized propane in the hose is exhausted, or it may not. I think they are intended to allow removal of one tank for filling, so it may just be the pressurized propane leaking out through the very small pinhole in the connector (compared to the size of the hose). But be advised that propane will leak, at least for a while, when you disconnect the trailer hose from the tank.

That's exactly how I use my portable grill.

It shouldn't leak unless the regulator is defective. Think about the times you have pulled the tank off to refill while operating on the other tank. Typically when I'm done with the grill, I'll pull the line to the grill off the tank and reconnect the tank. With the POL connections it's fast and easy to do.

Why not modify the grill to use the low pressure quick connect on the AS?. I do this and it works great. Easy mod.. all adapters..etc are available on Amazon.. I also modified my propane fire pit use the quick connect..but not enough pressure to really get the flames high enough..

Maybe check the open pigtail once with a little soapy water to see if it leaks gas?

I always do that and it doesn't leak out of the disconnected hose. Your BBQ will have way more heat hooking directly. The other connection reduces the flow too much.

I agree. Tried the low pressure LP port and it took too long to get the grill hot with the flame too low.

Direct connect with a Y adapter worked better for our needs.

And some of us don't have the availability of the low pressure port either. As it ended up for me I quit using the high pressure side because I now carry an 11 lb tank. I found I have a lot more flexibility to move my grill to another location depending on shade, rain, wind etc.

I did a conversion to the Weber ACME nut to be able to connect directly to the AS LP port. Installed a "Y" on the AS port, then attached the Weber (and the LP firepit) via a long LP hose. Works great and eliminated the need to attach and reattach the LP hose to AS. Easy.

Speaking of propane, how many of you turn off the valve to one tank just so you know how much propane is where?

During cooler months, I leave both LP valves open so as not to exhaust hot water during a shower! Years ago, on a rainy night in Georgia, during a CC trip from CA-FL-CA had a critter chew through the LP hose causing a slow leak that drained the tank (true story BTW). From then on, have been an assiduous checker of LP levels (and hoses).

I do as well. I also use the Mopeka tank monitoring system. I don't like to run out of propane because it always happens when you need it, of course!

I always pull gas from the curbside tank until exhausted. My "Y" for my grill and/or firepit is on the curbside. When the autos-witching valve shows red, I make plans to refill the empty within a few days. When i do, i move the street side tank to the curbside, refill the empty and place it back on the street side when full. That way there's always a full tank waiting to take over. - Brad

For me it’s nice to have a portable grill that can be used without having to bring the Airstream along. Additionally I like removing one tank from the Airstream to use wi further away from the trailer. Having an excessively long LP hose will result in reduced grill performance.

I understand. An alternative is to have a spare propane line with the regulator built into it. You would still need a 20lb tank but it allows me to use my grill when I have the airstream and to use it without having to bring the Airstream along.

As an aside. I also have a portable propane fire pit. I use it for the airstream like the grill (I had the regulator removed to use with the airstream port). I like to use the fire pit at home sometimes so I use this propane line with the regulator and a 20 lb tank so I can use the fire pit anywhere.

Start by getting yourself a couple mopeka’s and an extension.

Fish the extension from below inside your tank cover and leave it there while camping. You can now attach either your grill or propane fire pit to the extension when needed.

Recommendation: turn off your grill & fire pit at the tank. Allow either to extinguish before disconnecting the hose from the tank. There can be a surprising amount of propane in the line. Be sure to: turn either one off after doing so. Otherwise they will release propane prior to igniting the next time you connect them to the tank.
