Baby Q and the LP port

was planning on using the LP port to supply propane to our Weber Baby Q, but researching I have learned that the pressure from the LP port is too low to adequately supply the needs of the Baby Q. I don't want to sacrifice the ability to run the grill on bottled gas, but would sure like the option of the LP port, so has anyone discovered a solution?

I use the Torjik Weber Q conversion kit. It replaces the regulator on the Q to use with quick connect fittings. It is easy to take those fittings off and replace with the regulator if you need to use the small bottles.

You could take a pin vice and small drill bits and drill out the gas orifice about one or two sizes larger. Then test it to see if it has sufficient heat output on the LPG port, while still having decent range and not too hot with the bottle and regulator. It's a bit iffy fiddling with the orifices but I do it with nearly every grill I have ever bought so I can use nature gas at home rather than propane. The results are not as good as something properly engineered but it works.

I removed the high-to-low pressure regulator from the grill and added two fitting to end with a 3/8" flare fitting. From that fitting, you can add a 10' propane hose with a quick disconnect fitting to connect to the Airstream low-pressure port. Not sure what researching source you found, but our grill works fine using a 12 foot hose connected to the trailer's LP port.

I just ran it on high for about a half hour to burn the accumulated grease off the grate and it got up to 550 deg. In normal usage it gets plenty hot on the lowest setting to grill anything I've put on it. Normally I run it with the lid down, which helps in retaining the heat. Seems to cook about as quickly as the large Weber grill I use at home.
