WBCCI Units Bucking The Trend

It may surprise some of you to know that there are more than a handful of units that are bucking the trend in WBCCI of declining membership. There are varied reasons why these units have had increases.
I believe it would be to WBCCI's advantage to look into these varied reasons and then apply some of them to units that may be struggling.

There were 40 units last year that had increases in unit membership over the previous year.

Member's at Large (MAL's) also increased in number even though many joined units last year in part to vote on the name change issue.

There were 26 units that have increased their membership from 5 years ago in the 2002 Directory.

There were 16 units that have increased their membership from 11 years ago in the 1996 Directory.

I have these numbers broke down a little more in depth if there are any members interested in knowing either which units showed increases or their own units numbers over any period during the last 11 years.

These numbers are unofficial and derived from the information provided to me by the yearly WBCCI Directories.Be aware I am fairly accurate with the information that is provided to me and the totals are cross checked to get a more accurate number.

Yea New England! We know why our unit keeps growing!

We have FUN! We keep every member involved. Never leave anyone behind and always let everyone know what is happening. In the past two years many of our unit members have become truely great friends of ours and that is what it is all about. Plan ahead, plan for varied events and give everyone the opportunity to become involved. And if they don't like to get involved don't ignore them. Welcome them. Ask questions of your members and give good honest answers and never ever have a dull moment.

That is what Wally would do and that is exactly what #064 NEU does.

#170 That's us!!

#170 is the WDCU. I guess the founding fathers had it right back in the late 90's when they chartered the WDCU "KISS". I think we have members from 30 some odd states, including CA and the UK. I am very proud of the Prez's before me and what they helped to create. I just hope, I can keep it going.

If you want to know why we are growing, think about joining us at the Cherry Blossom Rally and find out! Sorry, had to take the chance to do a little promo of our rally.

Problem is unit numbers aren't exclusive to a particular unit..

"Unit numbers have been recycled for quite a few years.I believe the first time was in 1994 for unit#037 Coastal Georgia which replaced the original Unit#37 Central Illinois which folded around 1990.Heart of Texas is Unit#9 which used to be the Hemet California unit.
Not sure if I've answered all your questions but if not,let me know. " (Source AS forum)

Still the conclusion that some units are doing well seems valid.

The WDCU is a fantastic club. If we didn't have the NEU here in our backyard we would have joined the WDCU.

What is interesting (and great) is here in New England we have a number of WDCU members who are also active in the NEU. Attending many of our functions, enjoying the "fun, fellowship and adventure" that the Wally club promises us. Thinking it's because the two Units operate on the same principle, which is "It's just camping".

Yes,that is true,it's a good point and that is my quote you have used. All the unit comparisons I have used are for units that have not changed.Apples to apples so to speak. To the best of my knowledge none of the units that have changed have met the criteria for being on any of the lists during the timeframe of 1996-2007.

Always a pleasure to encounter a fellow methodologist along the path. I stand informed.

PS. This would look cool color coded on a US Map

There are more than one reason for our membership increase:
  • A supurb membership chairman
  • A great mentoring program
  • A friendly and inclusive bunch of folks
  • Interesting and fun rallies.
  • The willingness to try something new, such as our Vintage Rallies, including one that just ended, with 73 Airstreams on site including 24 Vintage.

At the "First Texas Vintage Rally" last week, we signed up 3 new members and have 3 more people that are seeking Airstreams and intend to join us when they buy one. Even with the loss of some elderly members, we are steadily growing.

By the way, many of our elderly members that can no longer RV continue to attend rallies by staying in motels. This includes both widows and couples.

We have the Past International President and the current 2nd International VP as unit members and they are active. The Past 1st Lady is our 2nd VP, following my wife in office.

"It's just camping" What a concept! We just joined WBCCI and the WDCU #170 on reputation alone! We can't wait for the Cherry Blossom Rally, our first!

Unit #009

I found this of interest and maybe some FCU members will as well. The club's newest unit...Unit #9 Heart of Texas...according to my calculations, has 20 members listed in the 2007 Directory in their first year in WBCCI.

And to think, four years ago we were told our options were to merge with another unit or fold. Instead, we chose to regroup and rebuild. Like the NEU and others, the SNU went back to the mission and purpose of WBCCI - going camping. We also learned from our past and have worked hard to be a flexible, welcoming, and inclusive group of Airstreamers. Looks like we are on the right track.

Growth of HOTC

The Heart of Texas Camping Unit (#9) was chartered with 13 members and we grew by 7 more members over our first year. Our unit most definitely bucks the mold. We are STRICTLY about camping. We don't do RV parks, we don't have agenda's, we don't have planned meals (everything is pot luck and the food is always wonderful), we don't have standing committees. We do have campfires, kids having a great time, dogs and cats always in attendance, we have late breakfasts (9:30am or so). We typically group at a state or national park. We did a group boondocking experience last July in the Taylor Reservoir area of Colorado and had a wonderful time. We know that our model is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is perfect for our group. We don't think that the more traditional WBCCI unit model is bad, it was just NOT for us.
