Hi,

I was told you may be able to assist in determining the history of the WBCCI # on a project trailer my wife and I purchased from the Canadian DND a little while ago.

I've added the link to the photos but the # is 7629
- Photo Gallery

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, we recently purchased a 1972 land yaht. And was wondering if you had any information on 29835. It would be greatly appreciated. We know very little about it and would love to know the history. Thank you in advance for volunteering your time for those of us that want to know the history of their travel trailers. Crystal & Alan ( love shack)

Hello Joe,
What do you know about WBCCI # 20832. She is a 1968 24' Tradewind. The ID #'s:
8 134 FT on top
0248 J 117 on the bottom
Came without a title. I ran the above numbers thru the Sherrif's office and the trailer came back clean.

Hi all, I will really get to your requests, in the order asked, eventually. I have been very busy lately and haven't had the time to look things up. Maybe I'll start trying to asnwer a few in the upcoming days. Thanks in advance for your patience.

Hi Joe,

When you have a chance to catch up, 4990 of a 1960 Overlander I just picked up in PA. I believe it lived it's first 51 years of life up there in PA. It does have the old rectangular Wally Byam Caravan decal below the numbers, so I'd be curious to know what Caravans it went on, if any.

Previous owner did tell me that the original owner had 2 identical trailers, one used for travel, one parked at a park. The one I have is supposed to be the one for travel...

Appreciate the time you take do pull the research!

Hi Joneslacey,
I'll try to answer at least one this evening. . . yours.

#1399 was first assigned in 1958, but was unassigned by 1969. After that is was assigned as follows:
  • 1970-76: Eugene and Loretta Chamberlain, Huntington, NY (1970) and Sarasota, FL (1976), caravans 77 - Mexico Winter 1971, 81 - Western Canada Summer 1971, 91 - Yucatan Winter 1973, & 93 - Western Canada Summer 1973.
  • 1977: I am missing that directory
  • 1978-79: Unassigned
  • 1980-81: Leonard and Rosile Muggleworth, Willingboro, NJ, no caravans.
  • 1982-85: Unassigned.
  • 1986: William and Maryanne Alcorn, College Park, MD, no caravans.
  • 1987-90: Unassigned.
  • 1991: Hal and Barabara Wolfe, Olympia, WA, no caravans.
  • 1992-93: Unassigned.
  • 1994-99: Gordon and Mildred Ebley, Oak Forest, MD, two WBCCI Unit caravans.
  • 2000-Current: Another couple from MD (name and city withheld for privacy reasons).
What can we tell from this? Well someone did not buy your '72 Overlander when new and then immediately join WBCCI. Either the Chamberlains traded up to newer trailer at some point or one of the other couples mentioned owned it. Since none of them are from states near Missouri, I don't even have a good guess.

Good luck and enjoy your Overlander!

Hi Journalist,
Since yours is a limited request, I'll answer a second one tonight. #3365 was first assigned in 1960 and then as follows during the period you asked about:
  • 1969-76: Philip & Dol Morris, Athens, TN, no caravans.
  • 1977: I am missing the directory.
  • 1978: Unassigned.
The Morris' were newly assigned #3365 in 1969, because it was assigned to someone else in the 1968 Directory. I would guess (but cannot prove) that the Morris' bought your Tradewind new and then immediately joined WBCCI.

Have fun with it!

Good night all.

Hi Harry,
Still trying to get caught up here on AirForums. Since I already answered your questions via email, I will not repeat the answers here. Sorry I couldn't prove that your '58 Fling Cloud had been on any famous (or not so famous) caravans, but it sounds like a great trailer anyway. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi Doug,
Your turn in line is finally up! #20333 was first assigned in 1967, but most likely late 1967, because the highest number in the 1968 WBCCI Directory (membership as of 12/31/1967) is 20528. Given that there were over 3000 new numbers assigned that year, being less than 200 from the maximum suggests a late addition, possible November or December 1967.

The research on this one was pretty simple. #20333 was assigned from 1968 through 1979 to George and Helen Roberts, Rochester, NY, no caravans. This number was unassigned from 1980 to 1982 and I didn't check any newer than that since you know who onwed it from 1982 onward. I think we can be certain that the Roberts' bought their 1968 Overlander new in late 1967 and immediately joined the club. It may have been a one owner trailer before your friend bought it, although I can't prove that no one else owned it for a while in the interim. I hope he has fun with it.

See you around - hope our paths cross this year!

Hi Owenslander,
I'll answer one last one tonight. #3993 was first assigned in 1960 to Daniel and Mabel Bremer of Huntington Park, NY. Daniel was last listed in the 1979 Directory, but Mabel was last listed in 1990, still in Huntington Park, NY. The Bremers are listed a having participated on the following caravans:
  • 28 - Eastern Canada Summer 1961
  • 29 - Eastern and/or Western Mexico Winter 1962 (both have the same #)
  • 30 - Western Canada Summer 1962
I would seem that the Bremers likely owned your '58 Traveler and may have taken an extremely long trip in 1961-62 through much of Canada and Mexico.

#3993 is then unassigned from 1991-94, before being assigned to a couple from Parkersburg, WV in 1995, no caravans. #3993 was then again unassigned in 1996-7, before being assigned to a couple from of Durham, NC, in 1998-2006, no caravans. #3993 was then unassigned in 2007-8 and 2010-11. It was assigned to a couple from PN in 2009.

I have no clue if any of these subsequent assignees of #3993 owned your '58 Traveller. I tend to think not. In any case, it is the early history that is the most interesting, especially the possibility that it went on some caravans.

Enjoy your vintage Airstream!

Thanks for the information on this little trailer. I appreciate your time doing this research for us. She had caravans stickers several places so we knew she probably was a caravanner. Thanks again, Brenda

Joe, I know these requests must keep you busy but you sure are making a lot of folks happy as they learn a little about the history of their Airstreams. Hopefully you will soon add me to the "happy list". Here is what I know.
1984 Sovereign, 27ft, rear bath.
Recent e-mail says our WBCCI # will be 2238 (they have not yet arrived)
We bought it a couple months ago from Marvin and Libby Crane. Current number on the trailer was theirs and is 1305.
Marvin says he bought it from John and Bee Wright. The 7 (that is right, 7) stars on the trailer belonged to John and Bee. Marvin and Libby just never took them off. (see pic) And John may have worked for Airstream. Skye and I are curious as to whether John and Bee were original owners and any caravan info would be great. I did hear they took a few trips to Canada and Alaska but I do not know if that was part of a caravan or just having fun.
The history of these things is soooo fun to find out....Like why is there a great big patch on the side? (see pic) (maybe some things will never be discovered...)
Thank you so much in advance...
Chuck and Skye

Hi 61Bambi,
Sorry to hear that it didn't work out. #7173 was first assigned in 1962, so it was likely original to the Globetrotter. I checked my 1966 Directory and the couple that had it then lived in Florida and had not been on any caravans. I won't go any further since you didn't get the trailer.

Hi Bill,
#20732 was first assigned in 1968, obviously before your '73 Tradewind was built. The original assignees were last listed in the 1970 Directory and #20732 was unassigned in 1971.

#20732 was then assigned from 1972-86 to Nathaniel and Ruth Colby of San Luis Obispo, CA (1972) and Sun City, AZ (1986). The Colby's are listed for the following caravans:
  • 85 - Yucatan Winter 1972
  • 95 - Eastern Canada Summer 1973
  • 99 - Western Canada Summer 1974
  • 102 - Mexico Guatemala Winter 1975
  • R10 - Tombstone Territory Trek Region 12 1978
#20732 was then unassigned in 1987-88, before being assigned in 1986-94 to Harvey and Jun Von Ahsen (or Vonahsen?) of Solon, IA, no caravans. #20732 has been unassigned from 1995-now.

So what does all this mean? Well we know that at least one of these couples, the Colby's and/or the Von Ahsens, owned your '73 Tradewind.

It is exciting to think that it might have been used on some caravans by the Colby's, but that may have not been so, because they joined during 1971 before your '73 Tradewind was built. The 1972 Membership Directory lists membership as of 12/15/1971. Thus, the Colby's would have originally joined the club with an earlier Airstream and they would have had to upgrade to a 1973 model at a later date. If they did own your '73 Tradewind, they might have bought it new or they could have bought it years later as a used trailer. I have no way to tell. The only was to tell more if you can find some evidence that your trailer was on one of the noted caravans or perhaps was sold by a dealer in or near CA or AZ.

On the other hand, the Von Ahsens could have owned your '73 Tradewind. Or maybe both couples did. It is hard to guess, because both couples lived states away from your current location in North Carolina. I guess in this case, the Von Ahsens were a little closer than the Colbys, but given the unaccounted for years between 1995 and 2011, anything is possible.

That's all I got. Have Fun!

EDIT: Actually, there is one other obscure possibility and that is that someone joined the club one year after the membership Directory was published, but then did not renew the next year. In that case, there would be no ongoing record that they ever were club members. This is the only possibility if the trailer was in North Carolina it's entire life. I tend to think this is unlikely, but it certainly is not impossible.

Hi Bruno,
What year and model Airstream is this for? That would help me narrow down what I need to search on a little more.

#5712 was first assigned in 1961. I spot checked several Directories and came up with perhaps a half dozen different couples that had been assigned #5712 from the mid-1960's to the 2000's. None were named Williamson, but then I did not do an exhaustive search, so I could have missed someone.

As for the Tulip Rally, as far as I know the most recent series of such rallies ran from about 1999 to 2004. There may have been others years earlier, but if so, I am currently unaware and don;t have any easy way to search for such information.

Hi Judy,
I haven't forgotten you, but I think the only fair way is to handle the requests in the order they are posted. That means there are two more to go before you. I am sorry I cannot go quicker, but each case takes 15 to 30 minutes (or more) of my time to research and write up depending upon complexity. With my very limited spare time, I just cant provide same day service. I hope you understand. But rest assured I will get to your request as quickly as I can.
