Nor' by Nor' East Caravan

I was out riding my bike in Topsfield Tuesday and spotted a glint of silver out of the corner of my eye as I drove past the Topsfield Fairgrounds. I did a u-turn and went back to investigate and found 34 Airstreams tucked away in the back of the fairgrounds. What a nice surprise!

I stopped in and visited with them for a few hours and found they were the Nor' by Nor' East caravan on their way to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. This stop was their second stop in the 54 day caravan. They displayed true Airstream hospitality by immediately welcoming me in, giving me a lawn chair to sit for awhile, a drink and some snacks.

Very cool.

I'd love to do that caravan someday. (And so many others too ...)

Hmm, do they have a URL; or any type of information on their organization?

Can't wait

The caravan is usually led by a good friend of mine Dave Levinson. He emailed me to say he will be in my hometown from August 10th-August 12th.This caravan runs every second year and I am looking forward to seeing him again. His son Gary usually co-leads the caravan with him.Maybe there will be some forum members in the caravan this year.

Thanks. And I forgot to mention that they invited my husband and I back to join them tonight for their salmon fish fry dinner!

Yes, I met both Dave and Gary who are the co-caravan leaders. Nice guys. We chatted for awhile about Airstream restoration and Dave showed me some modifications he made to his trailer -- addition of a tile entry way, tile bathroom and wood-look flooring.

I didn't ask about forum members so can't answer that question. But I did learn that caravan attendees are from all over the US -- from TX to FL to CA and everywhere in between! I even spotted a vintage Caravel trailer in the caravan.

I didn't have my cell phone on me but I was actually planning on swinging by your house on the way home from Topsfield on Rte 1. The reason I didn't was because I didn't leave the fairgrounds until dusk (around 8:30) and was more concerned at that point about getting home so I didn't have to ride the bike home in the dark for too long.

The caravan pulled out this morning (Friday morning) to head up to their third stop -- Boothbay, ME.

wow. thats an ambitious bike ride. or are we talkin' "motorcycle"?

Oh, well. missed 'em.

Maybe my in-laws will see them...they're in BBH right now. I wonder exactly where in BB they can find a place to park 30 rigs? did they happen to mention that?

I did take the motorcycle but it certainly is not an ambitious bicycle ride (only 18 miles from my house). I used to train on those Topsfield Rte 1 hills back in the day when I was riding my bicycle in century runs.

There are actually 34 rigs in this caravan. And, no, they didn't mention where they were staying but chances are it is at a campground as the caravan press release indicated:

"Most stops are in campgrounds or fairgrounds with hookups, but there are three stops with limited electricity, and one overnight in a Canadian Walmart parking lot. "

Did you get any of their itinerary? I am leaving Saturday for Newfoundland and may pass them on my way. Like to be on the look out.

Check out Shari's link in post #4 for the route and stops. Didn't see any specific dates though

No, I didn't get any of those types of details. You can check out streamers post above for the caravan's stops along with the map. I hope that helps!

When the caravan is on the move, I bet it is a sight to see -- 34 Airstreams stretched out over the miles. I know that the rigs don't stay too close together for safety reasons so a caravan of 34 rigs would stretch for miles!

Your question makes me think of the book "Where's Waldo?" except this is where is the Nor' by Nor' east caravan!

It can't be that hard to find 34 Airstreams!

I wish we knew when they would be coming into ME. We would definitely take a trip over to visit.

They are probably on their way into Canada by now. They were headed for Boothbay, ME last Friday and then they were off to Ellsworth, ME before heading out to Canada.

I guess we will need to pay more attention to the areas the caravans might be coming through. I would have loved to have seen them on the road or visited with them while in ME.

Yes, I will say it was great fun visiting with them. They all had a smile on their face, a sparkle in their eye, and lots of stories to share.
