Fourth of July Parade
One Man's Opinion
Please note rule #8 for the 4th of July parade at Bozeman
Rule 8
8. AMERICAN, CANADIAN AND MEXICAN FLAGS will not be used in conjunction with, nor carried with parade entries. These flags will be used in the Color Guard which precedes the parade.
The leadership of WBCCI is encouraging members to build a float, make signs, wear costumes, or whatever and march in the 4th of July parade.
But no flags on the 4th of July - no American flags on the 4th of July - wait a minute, let me say that again - no American flags on the 4th of July.
Has political correctness taken over the current leadership of our little camping club? Who could we possibly offend on the 4th of July - in the good old USA - by waving the flag.
Would Wally see danger with Mexican, Canadian, and (God forbid) American flags on the 4th of July? I think not - that rustling sound you hear is Wally turning over so he could better pen a request to Jackson Center asking that the (WB) be removed from our club's name.
Does that rule really make you want to enter? There is a mischievous side of me that pictures the Connecticut Club, better yet (ALL CLUBS), carrying either the largest possible Stars & Stripes, the Maple Leaf, or the La Bandera de México as every entry, however, with fuel prices as they are, I have no extra money for bail.
Aside from the above suggestion -which I believe would be great fun, we must pay close attention to the people we elect to the nominating committee. Do they support a single brand club and modernization of WBCCI? We can not afford to continue having a leadership with the mindset this parade rule displays.

The Parade Rules have been changed. New rule listed below.
American and Canadian flags or other National flags may be tastefully displayed and will be no larger than 3 x 5 feet, the size of the Color Guard flags that lead the parade. Audience members will be expected to uncover and stand only for the Color Guard flags as they pass in review.

Yeah, and what are they going to do if you violate the rules? Make you buy a Four Winds motorhome?

Klattu,
Dynamite paint job! But you don't need to worry about getting kicked out of the parade. . . 'cos a truck is not a flag. . .
Besides. . . it looks like the Powers That Be liberalized that rule.
Cheers,
Gort

Yes, they have lifted the ban on flags on 4th of July floats at the International in Bozeman. It was a very unpopular rule which caused bad feelings among many WBCCI members. It's nice that they have changed that rule, but it never should have seen the light of day in the first place. Haven't these people ever seen a 4th of July parade in small town America?
Silly rules like this one can be deal breakers.

Please remember that this is a camping club. I have enough people telling me what to do at work. There are a lot of differant personalitys at this type of gathering. I will say one thing, im not going to $5 a gallon for fuel to travel 1200 miles one way, and be worried about how i need to fly my flags. Its my rig, my cassa. I hope everyone has a good time, I know Me and mine will. Safe travels. Dan #7803

Sometimes all we need to do is point out a problem and it gets fixed, not immediately start throwing rocks. Obviously, whoever drafted the rules didn't think them through before they were published. This should have been caught in review, but stuff happens. Nevertheless, it's fixed now.
See you in Bozeman,
Randy

I am not a WBCCI member and I don't play one on TV.
But I have been a Boy Scout, Scoutmaster, and Military Honor Guard member. And anyone who has read the Boy Scout Manual has read a chapter on proper display of the US Flag. The original rule was proper flag ettiquette according to what people used to be considerd respectful display of the flag.
There is absoultly nothing wrong (in my opinion FWIW) with displaying a flag flying from a vehicle or marching ahead of a unit, but tacking it on a float or wrapping your scurfey little dog in it and not allowing the tail to fly free is not respectful. (the free tail flapping in the wind symbolizes our freedoms!) Thats what bunting is for. The Flag is not clothing or decoration, It is the symbol of our Country, and the blood we have spilled protecting our freedoms and rights!
Proper respect requires you to stand, uncover and salute Old Glory when it passes, something I rarely see happen any longer, and I miss seeing.
Eric

That's as it should be.
Sorry we couldn't be there this year Ed, but had issues with Lynn's 99 year old father.
Wanted to go to VAC in Colorado again, but they moved it too far into August. We willl be elsewhere.
Cheers

Clif is OK. It's care-giver issues. We must make sure about all of that before we go far away. We had to move him. Think all is OK now. We think we will be able to go north on our annual six week kite flying vacation.

Floats?

Ed,
Earlier on this thread it was noted that that rule was rescinded well before the rally.
The interesting thing to me is that none of the posts on this thread have shown any inkling of what this "parade" was actually like. It took place inside the fieldhouse and consisted entirely of people on foot--no such thing as a "float" unless you count a neat scale model Airstream pulled by a very patient beagle.
Of the 150 or so Units that were eligible to participate, only about 15 or 20 actually did. It was all over in about half an hour. The Wisconsin Unit won, first place, incidentally, although I suspect it was due more to subject matter advancing the objectives of the WBCCI--promoting the Madison rally--than due to our grace and artistry!
See you down the road,
Nuvi

And how about the flags we all display proudly on the front of our Airstreams?

If I join, will they take my Flag away, what will I get in return?
