You will have to ask one of the "Old Fart". I was not involved back then.
My father-in-law was given a post hole digger for Christmas one year for just that task.

Oh for the good Old Days.

Yeah, in the good old days it probably wasn't as deep.

Here's a link to a picture prior to the 1970s from Sierra Nevada's WBCCI site of a gopher hole.

It depends on the size of the Gopher.

You can spot the real gopher hole because it doesn't have a cover

Caution!

Having attended a Region 7 rally at the Huron fairgrounds, I can attest that the campground there has plenty of pre-dug gopher holes scattered about. Watch your step when walking.

That might be a solution to sewage disposal, but I don't think the gophers would appreciate it. (Groundhogs, actually.)

In Florida and Ga where I grew up, a gopher was what is on the top and makes a really big hole. The creature on the bottom looks like a cross between a rat and a squirrel. The hole it makes looks like it is a lot bigger than would be required for it to live in, but could be capable of holding a good bit of International waste. With 4000 trailers and Jack Daniel's flowing, how many folks fell in at any given rally?

"Pre-Dug"

That is an idea I had when I was younger. I was going to buy some land and dig post holes. Then when a farmer needed some he could just stop by and buy what he needed dig them up and on his way. Luckily for my fortune all the local cows where replaced by apartments before I bought the land.

A friend of mine from Texas used to wildcat oil wells. He said if they hit a dry hole they would recoup some of their cost by pulling it up, cutting it up into short lengths, and selling the pieces for post holes.

I think he drank a lot of Jack Daniels, too. . .

Some what closer to the original topic "The International". I just heard a comment relating to the new 3rd VP. The gentleman is 78 years and when asked why he wanted to run he said you don't have to do anything and he wanted his wife to be "First Lady"

Given that we shouldn't have a lot in the way of progress to look forward to.

His wife may indeed be "First Lady" but I believe that there is a lot of work being an International VP and President.

Do you think some younger people want to be a club president to have the fact added to their resume?
Do you think some older people want to be a club president to have the fact added to their obituary?

BTW: Every lady should be someone’s “First Lady,” or at least “Queen-for-a-Day.”

That job is thankless, they have a ton of work to do and for the most part they are happy when its over. Ask an old one or two.

BUT...... they need to take it off of auto pilot and get really inventive.

From what I've observed, most do it for the prestige in the "click", and you are definately right about the above. They need to develop more of an attitude of "how can we improve the club", rather than "this is the way it's always been done".

When our unit had a meeting to discuss the revised constitution, the main reason for keeping the old was "It's worked for fifty years." I kid you not. Sal.

I have a lot of trouble believing that quote. I know Jim quite well, having been his webmaster. He isn't young, but he is known for being a hard worker. I might believe that it was a tongue-in-cheek remark.

We haven't heard a lot about the past International Rally on the forums. Can any attendees give a thorough description of the events and facilities? AT 500 dollars a pop without travel expenses I would like to know what was so enjoyable about it and whether it is a hit or a miss going forward.

Even though I don't know him, and voted for the other candidate , I would be inclined to take the remark as tongue in cheek until I see something that would indicate otherwise

Having just spent 5 days at the Region 7 rally with them I have to agree that the remark was tongue-in-cheek. He has a very good sense of humor. We had couple discussions and he struck me as being a pretty straight shooter. Our installation of officers was a very laid back affair. I think he understands that somethings need to change but we can't throw the baby out with the bath water.
