Modifications for Microwave
I was able to pickup our trailer today from the factory. It was over there for some warranty work (expires in February) and some modifications we wanted.
One of the mod's was to modify the roof locker over the galley to accomodate a microwave.
The roof locker originally had 3 sliding panels. They were able to cut it down, fabricate a shelf and provide an additional outlet for the microwave.
What little storage we lost doesn't affect us because everthing that was in the roof locker is still there.
I provided a simple drawing and they took it from there.
I think they did a great job!

Nice Job!
Dennis,
Nice job! It really looks great! Maybe they should offer this option.

Fridge question....
Dennis -
Nice mod on the shelf. The micro will be an great addition - up and out of the way!
Do have a question about the photo with what looks like a bungee cord through your fridge handles. Doesn't you fridge have a 'lock' feature built into the hadle when you close the fridge/freezer?? Just wondering as it looked a little odd to me when I saw it - or is there another tie in there somewhere?

I like it! I have a 2004 CCD and was able to install a microwave on the floor directly under the stove/oven. We cut out the white panel so that it's snug around the microwave. Then used "L" brackets to secure the microwave to the floor. Pretty tight without loss of storage space.

Cosmotini / Dennis,
How much did Jackson Center charge you for the preping the trailer for a microwave? It looks really, really nice. Thanks, Gerry Goffinet, Franklin (Nashville) Tennessee

Note: This modification was on Denny's previous Airstream - a 28' CCD if I recall.

Looks good.
I know on my 05 and then 07 Safari's that behind the gas stove there is a 110v outlet where a micro can be plugged in. I guess it's there if you decide on the micro instead of the oven.

Gerry, I responded to your private message. However, I thought I would post for all regarding our install under the stove on the floor. Before the install, we stored the microwave under the front sofa and just folded the sofa door down to make use of it. As you know, there is a plug beside the sofa curbside. However, my wife wanted a microwave installed so that is was more easily accessible. The Airstream dealer in Searcy, Arkansas actually did the install for us. The guys there are great and can do anything you might dream up for your Airstream. Now that I know that the microwave install is such a simple solution, I'm confident that you can do this yourself.
All you need to do is remove the white cabinet door as well as the shelving behind it. Get the dimension of the microwave of your choosing (if we had it to do over, we'd get a Stainless model instead of black plastic). Cut the door around the dimensions. Place and secure the microwave (we used "L" brackets, but wished we had taken a little more time to make it look neater). There is a already a plug back behind the microwave. Once you've secured the microwave, secure the white panel around it. Our family uses a generator often, so we chose a lower power microwave.

I'd like to know what they charged you also - might be something I look into next trip that way.
Thanks!

Microwave in a CCD 28
I ended up going to the Sharper Image and bought one of their little portable microwaves. Very light and storable.
Smallest Microwave Ever Built to be Introduced at the Home & Housewares Show
We have been very happy with the unit, it does coffee, soup, popcorn, and the like. It's not an instant heater, but if you've got a few minutes on your hands she'll reward you

We have a 2006 Bambi Safari (22') and it has a stove/oven. Well we hardly ever use the oven. Anyone know what microwave would fit in it (storage wise). Even better would be a way to remove the oven part and put the microwave in it's place -- but that's probably too ambitious for me.

The Sharper Image Microwave will probably fit (store) in you oven...it's about a foot each dimension. Really a nice little unit per my earlier post...we took it on the WBCCI Alyeska trip this past year, and it will run off one of those little 1,000 watt geneartors sole on e-bay for $100 or so.

We have 2004 28 safari, this is really pitiful in my opinion that a premium product such as this does not have a microwave?? Is it just me, or should this be something we would expect in the years of production say after 1990? Please do not get me wrong, I love our a/s, but if sales are falling off, maybe a look at what might be the reason is more than just the economy. Little things like a decent bed would go a long way in customer satisfaction as well.

I found a Haier .5 cubic foot microwave, 600w., on Amazon. It might work on a 1,000 watt generator. But, no product reviews and when I looked on the Haier website, they don't list it at all. The other thing is that it is purple. It looks to be about a foot square. I wonder if its the one sold at Sharper Image which is now defunct I think.
There's also a low power Sharp microwave which is also a broiler and toaster. Seems to be around $150. It got some bad reviews on Amazon for quality.
We have an 800 w. microwave, but it won't run on a 1,000 w. gen. plugged into the shore power.

Hi, some models of Airstreams besides having a stove top, come with an oven, or a microwave, or a microwave/convection. Mine came with the stove top, an oven, and a microwave. I think the floor plan has something to do with it.

Robert,
we are in the middle of a kitchen make over for our "vintage argosy" and I am looking at as many pics as I can to come up with the nicest most space friendly design I can find. How much space does the micro take up in the pantry unit that is shown in your pic. above? I am thinking about taking out the whole stove/oven and just going with a micro/convection oven as we are mostly weekenders and do most of my cooking on a portable gas stove top outside.
