Another 22' CCD Dinette mod

Like others, though we love the layout of the 22' CCD, we felt the dinette setup was cramped, uncomfortable and took up too much floor space in the trailer. Spent some time tossing about different ideas on how to improve it.

While staring at it after a long bike ride in Moab last summer we decided to remove the front bench and see how it looked. We liked the result and donated the bench to a local who is probably still using it in his front yard. The dilema was what to do with the rear bench as it also housed the converter. Finally this is what we came up with.

We removed the rear bench, cut and modified the bench/converter bracket and moved it to the rear of the wheel well cover (similar to BDandTTs). We then turned the table 90 degrees and cut it into a half-moon shape. The benches we replaced with folding, reclining camp chairs. We lowered the table ~3" to fit with the camp chairs.

All in all we really like the new setup. The camp chairs are much more comfortable than the old benches. They can be moved wherever we want them, reclined, folded out of the way or even removed to open up the entire floorspace. We also don't have to carry and store extra chairs to use outside the trailer. The bathroom door now opens fully and it is easier to get in and out of the desk area (which I actually use frequently). When traveling we fold the camp chairs and lay them on top of the bed so they don't slide around.

Been having trouble loading the pictures so will try them one by one in the next few posts... jk

Broom Closet

Another small mod: we removed the privacy curtain from the left side of the wardrobe and turned the compartment into a broom closet. This one was real easy; we just cut out the back wall at the top and bottom and added some hooks. Simple but practical and a better use of that space, for us anyways (since we never used the curtain).

Excellent modifications - a lot more functional and versatile (especially being able to open up the whole floor space area if you need to). In general I think dinettes in trailers and motor homes leave a lot to be desired - typically cramped and not comfortable seating areas, just like you say. Takes courage to make that first real cut, tho'.....

Good ideas from both of you. I also like the flooring, JK3500. Is that a mod too? Also, when your chairs are removed it looks like you're ready for a dance party!

Thanks Lisa. Yes, we also replaced the vinyl flooring with 3/8" plywood. That thread can be found here:

We really enjoy the extra floor space. Never thought of dancing though (in my case that's probably a good thing).

Thumbs up

Don't know how, but I missed your photos when first posted. I'm always looking for 22' CCD mods.
The broom closet is a real winner.
