1995 "Excella Classic" - 25'??

We are looking at a 1995 AS which only says "CLASSIC" on the body stripe in front of the door. Owner knows very little about AS, and is unsure of the model.

Is this a Excella Classic? It has twin beds in rear. Dual axle. He says the camber body is 23' and the tongue is 3'. That might make it a 25, or maybe 26?

Any experts here that can identify it specifically?

Thanks!
Cheers,
Mark

Mark, you might refer to the this page of 1995 Airstream Factory Literature on the Airstream website to see if you can find the floor plan/interior features of the trailer that you are looking at. An Airstream is measured from the rear edge of the rear bumper to the tip of the tongue.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin,
That was super. Yes, I think we have it identified. We are going to see it Saturday and pretty sure we are going to buy it for 20 Gs if it is in good shape.

I am honing in on a 2020 Suburban for towage.

We sold our 2010 FC back in 2016, and so this will be our first "re-entry" to the AS world. We're spending the money normally saved for nursing homes at "the end." <---Just roll me up and smoke me when I die!

Nice to meet you!

Good luck on this trailer - hope it is what you're looking for.

We've got a 1994 Excella 25-ft, and we consider it a great size and layout with the twin rear beds.

We also pull with a Suburban, but in our case a 1999 Suburban 3/4-ton model. I don't believe that the 2020 model year offered a 3/4-ton Suburban, so be sure to double check the tongue weight on the trailer you're considering against the capacity on the 2020 Suburban.

Likely the tongue weight on the trailer will be at or exceed 1,000 pounds when fully loaded for travel, as the 25-ft trailers seem to have higher-than-expected tongue weights. I was surprised how quickly it rose once we loaded up.

In my opinion one of the causes of the heavier weights on the Excella line from this generation is the solid wood doors. They are beautiful, but they are heavier. The cabinetry in general is well made, but heavy.

A good friend of mine bought that same model trailer last year. It has taken quite a bit of work and $$$ to bring it back to reasonable shape. They are just tickled with it otherwise. Easily pulled with their 1/2 ton truck and a great trailer for being on the move.
Go in with your eyes wide open as it may cost some real money to fix depending on how well the previous owners took care of it. Check the appliances if they are working. The torsion axles are likely shot and will need replacing if they haven't been already. Check the condition of the caulk.
Good luck with your purchase.

An Excella 25 will have oak cabinetry. I had a '96. great trailer. Twin bed layout is nice. You can expect some expense eventually on electronic boards for fridge or HW heater, but that is to be expected on any vintage age trailer. I sold my '96 for exactly what I paid for it 7 years later
My torsion axles were almost ready for replacement. Still slightly positive arm angle. I know the new owner has not replaced them. Result is slightly lower ground clearance. It will depend on how much high temperature weather the trailer has been exposed to.

Hey folks!

Nice information there! We have been talking ourselves OUT of that 1995 unit because the owner has been using it as a guest house for a couple years in his driveway. He has never travelled with it. That tells us that he has no "hands on" knowledge of the condition of all the systems. Although it looks nice, it's all the system stuff that matters most.

I think we have set that unit off to the side. We found a newer 25 - a 2001 - which has been travelled and owner states has kept up all maintenance as recent as a few months ago. Sounds like a much better unit to pursue for just a few thou more than the older one.

Hoping to see this 2001 unit this Saturday.
Cheers, and thanks to all!

1996 25' Excella

Updated a 1978 23' International to a 1996 25' Excella (very used) twin bed. Cost 8 years ago was 16K, have since replaced axels (2K), tires, water heater, some kitchen plumbing, 30# propane tanks and led lights- Most of the work was done by myself and have used on many camping trips. Total cost of repairs over the years estimated to be about 5-6k, This unit seems to be about best unit Airstream designed for easy hauling and comfort for 2 people. Only item that I would change is the interior material of "mouse fir" - hard to clean.

The system stuff you're talking about isn't that complicated, and other than the coupler and axles there is nothing that wouldn't have been used for the past years while the trailer has been used as a guest house.

If the trailer is sound and solid with good sub flooring, I would not be afraid of it. I'd rather have a 1995 trailer in good condition over a 2001 model just based on the warmth of the interiors vs. the newer ones. Personal preference, of course, but it's something to consider.

I've seen some newer trailers that had poorly done maintenance by owners (sloppy re-caulking, butchered modifications, etc) that would also take a newer trailer out of the running for me.

My point? Don't dismiss a trailer just because it's been sitting for a while. If the structure of the trailer is sound it might still be worth the effort to bring it up to snuff for use. And, it might be cheaper in the end.

I have a 1995 Excella. It says Classic on the front and Excella on the back. It is a well built trailer. I love the oak cabinets. I hate it when someone paints them.

Well, this trailer got sold out from under us. The hunt goes on.

We're heading out this morning to LA to look at some more units. We've raised our budget making more units come into view!
