Has Anyone Repaired or Replaced Their Step Light?

This is my step light from my 92 Excella. As you can see the bulb holder is and socket is rusted out. As I imagine most of you know this light is no longer available, but I'm looking for suggestions. Have any of you early 90s late 80's Excella owners repaired or replaced their Step Light? I found a surface mounted light that could probably do the trick, I'll just have to patch the skin because the original leaves quite a hole. I've done a number of patches, and the shell is completely open at this point, so it's not that big a deal. I just thought I'd see if anyone has done do something with this light, and how, before I commit. No matter which way I go it will be LED when I'm done.

We had the same light on our 2002. The lens yellowed and I replaced it with an LED twin. That yellowed again. The second replacement is in the picture below. The light is LED and used on present Airstreams and other RVs. The aluminum patch is clear coated with automotive clear coat, so looks a bit different than the panel aluminum around it. Noticeable in the picture, but not really otherwise. Olympic rivets.

Hi Tim,

I like it very much. Where did you buy it?

Yeah, I replaced the step lights on 2 trailers. And put LED pack in the scare lights. The LED's I picked seem too bright. I can live with it. But maybe not my neighbors.

Hi Bill,
I replaced the round "scare" light above and in front of the door with an LED version I bought from Dan at led4rv.com 3 years ago. I've never felt it was to bright, but can't speak for my neighbors. [emoji51] He didn't have an LED replacement for the step light. At the time I replaced the lens. Waste of money. It yelled in no time. Dan did not have an LED bulb that would fit the old step light either. I like the one Tim used a lot. Is that what you did?

This is the one I used: https://www.amazon.com/Manufacturers...010578&sr=8-54. I don't remember if I bought it from Amazon or not.

Thanks Tim. Very much appreciated. I should have commented on your workmanship in my previous post. That's a fine looking patch. It doesn't look like a patch at all. I hope mine turns out as nice.

Thanks! It certainly does not need all of the rivets, but I think they look good and provide a match to the trailer. The patch is sealed with Sikaflex. I used butyl rubber for the lamp itself in case it ever needs to be replaced.

Same here. I rivet mine to match the seams they are close to. So, lots of rivets. I've been sealing my patches with Trempro 635 very similar to the Sikaflex from what I've read. I think we've done 16 patches to date from big to small, but I've probably forgotten one or two. And I've got a couple more to do that are exterior lights related (the step light and the center brake light). We sealed up a few holes I'm not even counting with buck rivets. ;-).

I've gone over our 92 front to back and top to bottom. No leaks. At least not anymore. Hahaha That certainly wasn't the case when I started. The step light being evidence of that.

Just like the one Tim found for me on Amazon. I believe I saved a buck on Amazon. [emoji28]

Was that for his step light? Seems like a nice fix in that it turns itself on and off.

Wouldn’t the light go on and off while driving down the road? Motion detection...

I can't help with the patching but I replaced my step light with that exact one on our 2012 Classic. It is nice and bright! Much brighter than the original one, which is like the one mentioned from Jackson Center.

I drilled out the rusted socket and put a led bulb holder in its place. Used jb weld to hold it in place.
Working for over 2 years .
