Got my 1980 excella and absolutely love it. Spend almost every weekend in it at a local lake. Center bath, twin rears. Have put a new water tank, new furnace in and new door hinges, and gettting ready to put in new water heater and new axles are ordered. Got my parts from Andy at Inland and really found the help and service great.

I understand that Airstream has been quite secret about the numbers produced in any year and was wondering if someone has put together a guess as to the approximate numbers produced based on serial numbers etc. Does any such information exist? Where did the number of less than 100 in 1980 come from?

I am also interested in the numbers of Argosy's produced.

Most manufacturers consider production numbers proprietary information.
For 1980, I`d say number of Argosy trailers produced as zero.

It's odd but Airstream did not release serial #'s for '80,'81,'82. Perhaps this is due to the change over from Beatrice to new owners "THOR". It looks like they did list GVWR instead of Dry weight in '82.Airstream, Inc :: Serial Numbers

Our Excella has serial #231T0J1151, which I think makes it a 31ft, 1980, center twin made in JC and #1151 off the line. It has a production date of June, 1979 listed on the placard with the serial number/weight/etc.

It has no Excella branding at all except for a small (+/_) 2x8" plate with Airstream Excella inscribed/engraved into the plate. No other branding except the Airstream letters on each roof end. There is another one identical to ours that nugyendt has posted pictures of in the photo section, but that's the only other one I've seen just like ours. I figure it's a Frankentrailer, part Beatrice, part Thor--made up from left over bits.

Doesn't really matter what it is since we like it. But inquiring minds would like to know.....

Mine is #E31T2J4038 #1488 off the line. Production date 2-'72. I think # 4191 would be mid production for my year '72. I have seen very few pictures of the floor plan mine has.It Resembles the Sovereign "Double" with a curved L-Lounge w/pullout,but with center Twins instead of a double.I believe each and every one of us has a unique example of an Airstream. i'll have to look ours up to get that information, and will put it on my list of things to do. we're headin out for the first time, on ours, this year, first wknd in aug., been
extremely busy. we have all the paperwork, on ours too.

I own the trailer that jjonesnc had.

The numbers on it are: 23 1 TQ J1466 with a build date of 1/2/1980

That would have to be with in a couple of numbers of the first trailer built that year.

It has the Excella markings on the exterior and most of the upgrades for that year.

I am looking at an Excella II 31' currently and sequential number is 1673 with a production date of 7-16-80. Nice trailer. Though not 100% sold on it yet. Needs 100% redone inside.

1980 - 2015 makes it 35 years old.

The advantage of it NOT being redone is that it's less likely to be botched up by someone who didn't let ignorance and/or stupidity stop him/her from doing the work.

When I hire someone or do it myself I have a very real world expectation that I've selected a decent craftsman or spent the time, energy, and bleeding knuckles to do it right and have a durable and safe result.

It usually costs 3 times as much to undo-and-redo than to just DO it.
