Smile 1980 Excella II Reno 31'

I am starting reno on my 1980 Excella 31' I purchased this year.
Starting at the rear and working forward.
Has not been on the road since 2009. Everything works .
Interior was still 1980. Going to try to keep factory layout of trailer. Though modernize colors and fabrics.

Is that a Commodore 64 on that shelf?

Nice looking trailer, best wishes on that renovation?

Good looking trailer.

May I suggest you work from the bottom up instead of rear to front?

Finish all issues on the bottom side of the trailer (under the belly pan, including axles) prior to the topside.

Good luck, keep us posted.

I would be tempted to leave it 1980 if it is in good shape.
I kinda sorta dig the striped upholstery on the club chair and gaucho.
It just needs some orange shag carpeting...

Oh my gosh I had the same curtains in my bedroom. It looks like you use to have twin beds. I worked on my trailer for a year, and in my eyes it looks great.. I wish I had your club chair. Mine was long gone by the time I got my trailer. Good luck and post photos

Any one else have an 1980 Excella II? Can you post the first character of your vin number? Heard from Airstream that should be a letter E though mine starts with a 2 and that indicates special unit. Just curious how many other variations of the 1980 are out there. Mine came with 4 roof vents originally, previous owner replaced one skylight with ac unit in center, about 9 years back. All specs for the 1980 show three roof vents. My trailer also has the 1981 floor plan and glass in door, Though does not have the scare light like the 1981 units. Unit came with double bed from factory though vin is for twin beds. Guess someone grabbed available tag not paying attention to interior features?

Good luck with the Reno! Keep posting pics.

We have an 88 Excellea 34' and we are almost all original except the couch. My wife wanted to change out our Mauve/pink curtains with any other color. If you're replacing your yellow ones we may be interested!

I think Ginger's sharp eyes (post #7) caught the fact that you probably had twin beds originally. Judging by the wall patches in you last photo, I bet she is correct.

You have a beautiful time capsule. Good luck with the updates!

The top rear center marker was not working and had no power going to it. After investigating and inner skin off found the problem.
Wire came out of non crimped connector. I imagine front center light is the same problem. Click image for larger version

Nice trailer. Check for leaks at the rear under the carpet or whatever floor covering is there. I had to replace the last 4 ft of floor in mine in the back. That plate that holds the lid for the sewer hose compartment funnels water into the floor.

Corner Lights.

I had been asked by neighbors why I had no Christmas lights on the Airstream. I was in Maine the other day and stopped into Dysarts just off I-95 outside of Bangor ME and came across the colored lens covers. While I went to replace the old bulbs with the newer 194 bases ran into an issue with the corner lights. The screws were corroded in place. Broke the heads off, and ended having to put them in the shop press to get the old screws out. This enlarged the hole so the #8 Phillips screw would not fit back in. In turn I used riv-nuts #8-32 with stainless screws. I am contemplating doing the same for the center ones that only screw through the skin. This would give the screws a better backing to screw into. Any one else do this?
I hate Phillips screws because the ease of stripping the head if they are stuck. In this process of renovating the Excella II I have had to cut many screws or use vice grips on them. I prefer the Robertson head screws better. Any one else? Guy at parts store told me it is a Canadian thing to hate Phillips screws.
In the spring when it is warmer I will remove all the lights and start to polish the trailer if the interior is complete by then. We have snow already here. So going to be a cold renovation this winter.

You may want to look at replacing all the exterior lights with LED. May I suggest Vintage Trailer Supply for exterior lights. http://www.vintagetrailersupply.com/category-s/446.htm.
They have a great selection of LED lights.
For the interior lights.... If the fixtures are still in good working order, look at 4M products. M4 Products. They have great LED bulb replacements, and they are very helpful.

Some Progress.

Been awhile since I have posted anything. Have done a little more work on trailer over the winter. Been very busy with work so not as far along as I would like to be. May not get complete this summer. But do not want to rush it either.

Have the bathroom, closet, bedroom, and starting on the kitchen cabinets removed. Have received my order of 4 new Fantastic vents. Will be replacing the existing three vents on the roof, and also removing the ac unit and installing a vent in its place. Will be installing a concealed ac unit.

Information center works other than clock. I have a building pile in my garage I am going to have to list for sale. Light fixtures, toilet, trim work.
