Back up Camera

I am ordering a wireless backup camera and I would like to mount the camera in place of the middle clearance light so I wouldn't have to drill a hole to run the wire. Has anyone ever done this? Bad idea?

I don’t know that “in place of” is a good idea. I believe the lights are required due the size of the trailer.

Shouldn’t be too difficult to piggy back off the center light’s power source while leaving it in place. Mount the camera with VHB tape and you are good to go. Just make sure you seal everything up really well.

I knew they were necessary, but never had traced to a source. I found this reference, it is a federal requirement to have exactly 3 lights in the area where they are commonly seen, on a trailer more than 80” wide.

Lots of folks (me included) power the rear view camera from the center mounted clearance light, but you need to keep that light operational, and retail visibility to it (don’t block the light with the camera)
