Water Heater Burner

I'm getting a lot of soot coming out of the external water heater burner compartment and smudging up the side of my 2004 Safari 28'. The water is heating ok but it sure is making a mess. Is it a problem with the air/gas mix and only an adjustment problem or do I need to take the burner assembly out and clean all the ports or just buy a new assembly? Thanks

I'd start by checking the color of the flame. Is it blue? and fairly quiet? If not adjust the air fuel mix.

Make sure there is nothing blocking the flue. Dirt dobbers like to get in there and make nests. Also make sure the little air vent around the burner tube is not blocked. I believe you turn this vent to change the air/fuel ratio.
