Tongue weight 2004 Safari

Is tongue weight calculated to include batteries and propane tanks? Mine is about 100lbs over the 740 recommended by A/S and I know i have not added that much wewight inside of the trailer.

Looking by your pic you don't have a 25C unit. As far as I know the weight did include the batteries, propane, etc. When I put a hitch weight scale under mine when it was loaded, I found our 25 C unit was about 100lbs less than spec, which I found odd.

You say you didn't load it up, but could you have put a good amount of gear front of the axles? I tend to keep a lot of the weight as close to the axles as possible.

BTW, is that a model "A"?

Silvertwinkie - I try to balance the weight as best I can but the front has little load so it should knot be over weight. Maybe someone knows the actual formula to determine tongue weight. It seems like I have read somewhere that you can get tongue load using a bathroom scale, but I can't find the article.
It is a 1931 Model A Closed Cab Pickup.

Try this page:

http://www.rverscorner.com/articles/tongueweight.html

The trick for accuracy is to have accurate measurements on the load, the fulcrum and the supports.

Be SURE the trailer is at the EXACT same angle as your tow hookup. With the tongue just a couple of inches above or below "tow level" a significant amount of weight is transfered to the front axle, the rear axle, and/or the tongue.

BTW, for usually less than 20 bucks you can weigh your entire unit at a commercial scale a half dozen times and get an accurate weight on the axles and wheels individually. In addition, you can determine the proper linkage setting on the weight distributing bars by actual weight measurement - much better than the "measure the inches from the bumper to the ground" method.

Look around where the "big rigs" hang out for the commercial scale locations - Interstate truck stops, cement yards, grain elevators - during "off hours" most places I have stopped at have been happy to oblige (and help).

Please report back with your results - both on the AS and the Tow Vehicle.
