State parks and/or beaches with RV hook up in TX

Happy New Year everyone!

We are looking at planning some long weekend trips around Texas and were wondering if folks had any suggestions for good state parks or beaches out here that they've had good experience with? We live in Austin and our usual get away is Ft. Davis, McDonald Obs, and Big Bend.

Thanks in advance!

The Hill Country is full of wonderful state parks, almost all have campsites with at least water/electric. There will be a dump station. Look at http://tpwd.texas.gov. for information and to make reservations. Weekends are hard to get unless you reserve really early.

Inks Lake is my favorite, but I haven't had a chance to check out many of the others. Garner is also very popular with my kids and grandkids.

Short answer is all of the state parks have hook-ups. The most important part of staying in any one of them is to remember to reserve well in advance if you want a hook-up site. Last time I checked, Garner was booked 330 days out, for instance.

I've always enjoyed Tyler State Park in NE Texas. Prettiest in the fall, but nice all year. Brazos Bend SW of Houston was a neat experience in late winter. Thousands of gators lying around too cold to make a real attempt at snatching anything...though we did see some people trying real hard for that Darwin Award. I've heard the recent years' flooding has damaged a lot of this area, though. 2nd the Inks Lake SP listed above, even though it's pretty close to you/Austin. Sorry I'm not much help with the beach parks, haven't been down there enough to know yet...

Goose Island SP is pretty small but abuts the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Mustang Island and Galveston Island State parks are better 'beach' parks.

We have stayed in Mustang Island state park a couple times and camped right on the beach. Nice and you can easily visit the local attractions, get good seafood, and enjoy the area; winter has the largest giant whooping crane population in North America which fly down from Canada to Aransas Wildlife Refuge, not far from Mustang Island... 5 feet tall with 7 foot wingspans...amazing to see in flight!

Wine, beer, and spirits- if your looking for some fun and great exploring, we like to go to Fredericksburg where there are several campgrounds, Garrison Bros. distillery, great wineries, and also microbreweries in the area plus great places to eat in and around Fredericksburg. Hiking of course to Enchanted Rock if your into that, or some unusual fun in Luckenbach on the weekend when musicians visit; never know who will just drop in and sing! (could include Willie)

Beyond that around Austin, there are several places: Pedernales Falls state park, Pace Bend Park, and of course Inks Lake, and Lake LBJ/Marble Falls area. (Great wineries the area here also.) Post some pictures of your trip.

Don't forget Guadalupe River SP, Palmetto SP, Brazos Bend SP and Goose Island SP. Keep your dog on a lease in Brazos Bend or a gator might get it.

Check out the Texas State Parks web site at
http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/
You'll find a map there with all the state parks marked.

They also have a free iOS/Android app with downloadable info on all the state parks.

Those TSPs that have RV camping seem to have sites with water/electric and a central dump station. Some campgrounds also have shade structures and/or barbecue grills.

We stayed a week at the Dellenara RV Park (private) on Galveston Beach, it was a wonderful facility that was right on the water. You'll want to make reservations well in advance and fees are paid upfront. It has the usual wifi, clubhouse, convenience store and beach chair rentals, etc you'd find at an RV Resort. We hope to make Dellenara a regular stay for us.

Further down the island we found the Galveston Island State Park. It has hookups, covered tables and is also on the beach. Clean and updated, I was impressed that a State Park was so close to the water (separated by a Wildlife Protected dune) with large sites, great wildlife and not many beachgoers.

Both parks were a few miles down from the Pleasure Pier and the beaches were clean with very few people, you can also drive on the beach in certain areas too, our trip was in September.

Thumbs up Beach

Galveston Island State Park has beachfront spots, onsite manager, nice restrooms. Great place but book ahead.

Try http://brazoriacountytx.gov/departme...quintana-beach. It is not a state park, but it is on the beach.

One of the best parks in TX is Goliad S.P. Full hook up, pull thru and not to fire from the coast. Be sure to make reservations.

Just spent the night at Mother Neff just north of Austin. What a gem. Nice for a weekend getaway and some hiking.

I also hear good things about Brackenridge (although I have not stayed there) and I met and had lunch with its superintendent at a continuing ed gig a year or two ago. She was really nice and noted that Brackenridge is a lesser-known recreational complex and it tends to be underutilized as a result. "Underutilized" is rare for Texas with its human population of 30 million - the only other park for which I have ever heard that term used is Big Bend Ranch State Park.
