Starlink Price Increase - Again!

I received an email message from Starlink this morning informing me of a price increase starting in October. They are now including in motion use along with international travel and coastal coverage for the additional $15 per month. Wow, they just keep increasing their price just like the regular cable TV providers.

Got the same message. Looks like they are merging the yacht plan with the rv plan. Coastal coverage means nothing to us, and as for those of us in North America who already had Canada, United States, and Mexico included; the only thing international coverage gains us is central america, and I for one am not planning to tow my trailer to Panama.
The in motion use though, I will use. Going to get a roof mount for my TV and then when I drive the cassiar highway to Alaska I’ll get service and that is cool beans.

Wow, I never realized how expensive that service is. I guess sticking to my cell as a hotspot is in my long term future!

There is another service plan that gives you 50 GB a month for $50. plus you get to add on for a dollar each extra gigabyte.

You can also pause that service and turn it on so it’s more for our RV, not full timers in guessing. .

Good to know...still, that is going to get expensive either way because one can chew through 50gb in a few days streaming. Is the $165 unlimited data? Not that I advocate driving hundreds or thousand of miles to sit an watch TV....and I get there are some folks that full-time and those who work out of their trailers nowadays, but as a transient user, I could easily see this hitting $100/mo or worse if there are more rainy days than not. To me, having my cell hotspot seems like a more reasonable, though not as robust solution, at least for now.

Hi

On most cell plans, there's fine print. Run through 10's of GB and you likely will get throttled. Just how quickly that happens depends a lot on your plan ( = how much you are paying ....). The bold print says "unlimited" the fine print says "past here you may get a really slow connection".

Starlink does not do long term contracts. They can change any time. You can drop any time. You can sign up again when you want to. What will the price be X months from now? who knows ....

Interesting, I got the same letter but no mention of a price increase. I have a V2, is the increase for V3 maybe? Or they forgot to tell me.

Yes, that is weird as we too have the V2 dish.

Exactly Bob.

That’s why we signed up for the RoamLink plan with MMH that has all four carriers on one E-SIM card. Supposedly you won’t get throttled back by the individual carriers as you would with just having any one individual plan with a carrier. He explains it around the 5:40 mark on the attached video. We went with the $159 300GB plan and also have Starlink on our Peplink router.

I have a trip planned down south later this month and will be able to test it and see if what they claim is true.

Hi

If you dig into these "resale" cell plans, typically they are buying "extra" bandwidth from the carriers. When the tower gets crowded, they are the first ones to get throttled / dropped. That most likely happens when you have one and only one carrier in the area ....

If you are in the middle of an urban area and there's lots of capacity, sure things may work very well. Typically we don't camp out in "downtown at the big city" .

Great for advertising. Great for paying YouTube folks to put up videos.

That's only for the Mini, unless that changed, otherwise it would be our choice.

Edit: I'm wrong, I see I can order the V3 with the 50GB plan. I don't see a way to convert our current unlimited roam to a 50GB plan, I'll have to look into it.

Edit-2: I was able to change my service plan to 50GB/mo for $50! Maybe the option was there all along, or something new. I'll try it out this weekend in the wilds of western Wisconsin.

Bob, MMH invested to setup RoamLink as a true MVNO Mobile Virtual Network Operator. They manage the signal from the tower to the internet.

Take a look at the video when you get a chance. Again, I'm looking forward to see how it performs and ready to call BS on it too.

Edit to add: Eric on that video is the owner of MMB.

I was going to say the same thing - about the 50bg plan being mini-only - but I went to double check, and see that yes now you can get this plan on the Gen3 dish. I'm 99% sure this was not the case when I activated my Gen3 system 10 days ago....?

So were you able to make that change from unlimited to 50gb plan while your unlimited plan was active, or while it was paused?? My unlimited plan is currently active, and if I go to the "Subscription" page in the app, I don't see any clear way to change anything.

Eureka and I stand corrected - after pinwheeling for quite a while, the Subscription page in the app did properly load and I DO see where you can now change the service plan within the app. This is a very welcome addition for my needs and so is the ability to now use the Gen3 setup in motion. (At least I think this is the case.... we can now use the Gen3 dish in motion on the 50 gb plan, am I right??! It doesn't state this specifically within the text description in the app.)

The throttling back also depends where you are and how much the providers load is, guessing west has less of that compared to northeast. That’s my understanding, could be varies by provider.

How do you pause Starlink? Is this easy or a pain?

50gb is about 20hr sod video a month. So an hour a day I guess. Depends I think for us. Traveling a few times a month the usage is plenty.

Simple to do right in the app. When you pause, the pause will take effect at the start of your next billing cycle/period (ie, you will not be refunded if you pause mid-billing cycle, since you have already paid the full amount up front for this billing cycle).

You can then un-pause any time, and if you un-pause anywhere in the middle of your billing cycle (which will be pretty much always), the amount you're charged for that billing cycle will be pro-rated based on how many days remain in your billing cycle. Overall it's a simple process and a great feature of the service.

We do the same thing. Load a bunch of movies and stop at a hot spot for other uses so we can use our phones. Really not a big deal. Also we don't use the TV monitor just our iPads, that way we can each choose what to look at.

Most of us don't go deep in the outback. For us, the best deal is Visible 100+Gigs data at 100+Mbps and TRULY UNLTD hotspot (although throttled to 5 Mbps, is more than plenty to stream and surf) for $25 month. If you can hang in VZN territory, this is the best way. I live and die off the net.
If you can beat this deal, LMK!
