Smaller Tommy Bahama copper & polished S.S. round table
Smaller Tommy Bahama copper & polished S.S. round table
We found the supplied AI hex corian table was too large for our needs. Actually, we rarely even use/need it. Then I found this Tommy Bahama copper & stainless steel serving tray. It was the perfect size for our needs (20" dia). It also has a deep lip to prevent things from sliding off and contain any spills. But it's best feature is its small size & round shape, making it easy to ingress & egress around it even when mounted on its pedestal.
To fabricate was really easy. It took longer to drill the holes on the tray & banding because my drill bit had dulled out (and I was too lazy to run out to Lowe's), than to put the entire piece together. I routered out a bigger piece of butcher block to same size as a base. Mounted a lazy susan under it. And strapped the side circumference with polished stainless steel banding attached with stainless steel round head screws to make them look like AS rivets. That ought make it feel at home inside an AS

Really nice work.
Great minds tend to work in the same circles. Last week, at our Xmas rally, I was setting up our boat anchor of a Corean table and thinking of replacing it with a slightly smaller and hopefully somewhat lighter wood table. I was thinking of a round table to make getting past it easier and a butcher block cutting board came to mind. When I came home, I found on the web a 1 1/2" thick, 18" John Boos maple block that looks about perfect. Looks like that block would weigh about 10.6#. I haven't ordered anything yet ... far too much on my plate this season.

Ok... That is really awesome. I think we put our table top on once. It is great if you are sitting but not trying to navigate around.
Are you converting the old table top.storage area to store this? Or where are you keeping it when not in use?
We have the TB lounge and this thing is now also on my list.

Agreed, it’s better than original! I’ll copy it and mount the base off-center so I could swivel it for even more flexibility.

Alex - Great mod !
If you ever get bored (ha!) you could manufacture and sell some of these for those of us that are less skilled or without all the tools.....

Where are the holes on the tray? Just the wood table with the band would have looked nice. The tray just takes it a notch over.
Nicely done Alex, nicely done!!

Really nice idea. Good one for Interstate owners who don't need a full-sized computer table such as we built.

JOHN - Thank you. That is almost same size as mine. Did not weight it, but definitely lighter than the AI issued Corian. While it looks hefty & beefy (and it is), it still light

TOBBUN - Thank you. I am not using the old table top storage area. I can not anymore since I am using for different storage functions & containers (see here).

TRONADORA - Thank you. From the folks I have met here, it seems AS/AI owners never get bored and more importantly are never boring They are always tinkering with their rigs. The WACHUKO List never ends

INTERBLOG - Thank you. Definitely for the minimalist usage. For real computer usage, I would have had to go larger than AI hex table.

BREZZIN - Thank you. Some background here - I am a big time fan of bare/polished metals like copper, brass, titanium, alu, etc. And also big fan of butcher block. So, I could not resist putting all of them in this combo. I do realize there is not a single piece of copper in the AI to coordinate with (electrical wires don't count). But that's why I thought it would be cool to put in

WACHUKO - Thank you. Yeah, just the butcher block would've been nice. If you notice the bottom side, I already created the retaining lip, so it can be used topside. But I decided mounting the copper tray would be nicer. It pained me to drill a hole on the tray. Was a tough decision to use a few or just one. I decided to have 1 thru-bolt on the center and secure the perimeter of tray using 3M Automotive 03614 tape. It was painful to have to drill a hole right into the Tommy Bahama label up top & logo down under. But I wanted 1 bolt minimum.

GPERN83 - Thank you.
JOHN - Just a correction - the diameter on my tray is approx. 17" . So its almost identical to your John Boos block. I not sure why I posted a larger diameter, probably remembering the original size of the stock I used. I weighed the entire finished product and it's barely 7-lbs. Definitely 3x much lighter than the Corian top

Very nice mod. Another option would be to just make a jog and route out the interior of the butcher block base so as to create a lip around the circumference. You could round over the lip to give it a nice finished look. I don't have an AI so I know space is limited, but for those who need a larger computer table I imagine you can store the larger table for when needed.

Very nice Air99.
Another nice thing when it wears out or gets a little rough around the edges you just make another one. Lots of nice serving trays out there these days to use.

VATRAVELERS, HITTENSTIEHL, THEPARULA, MAGGIE, MANSDERM161 - Belated thank you(s). I originally posted it is 20" dia, which I corrected to barely 17" dia. But with raised lip, it is only 16" dia. usable.
VATRAVELERS - Yeah, actually I did router out a lip from the butcher block & use it just that way (see the pic of underside with pedestal base). But then wife found the tray and so ended up flipping it upside down, using flat part to attach metal tray to and using the routered side to attach lazy susan. So I guess I can also call this a reversible tabletop
