Rocky mountain national park

Can anyone comment how the airstream interstate does in this park . The drive is supposed to be fantastic but it climbs 4000 feet. Just curious

I haven't been there personally, but here are some videos I found on a youtube search.

Very narrow two lane road over the top at 12k + feet. Some stretches with no shoulders. Been over it twice on motorcycles but not in rv. I have seen rv's up there.

I've driven it in a car.
Now there two roads, I assume you're talking about the "ridge road".
The views are spectacular. The road is a well maintained two lane paved road. I don't recall any tight switchbacks, and I saw vans making the trip. I can't imagine a AI would have any issues. I probably wouldn't tow a Airstream Classic over it. Plenty of pull offs, and nobody is driving 60.

We went last year. No issues whatsoever. For the trailheads with limited or no parking, they offer easy and frequent shuttle services from the campgrounds at no charge. Definitely take advantage of that. Such a beautiful park!

We were all over RMNP about 5 years ago, for 3-4 weeks, and had no problems whatsoever...lots of lovely NF campgrounds we had no problems getting in and out of.

Go. Enjoy.

We have had our 2017 GT up over Guanella Pass near Denver. Nearly 11,700 feet. Road up is narrow, steep, with severe switchbacks. No problems at all.

We were hoping to camp in RMNP in July, but the main campgrounds in the park were already fully booked a month ago. I presume you either have reservations or plan to stay outside the park.

Most of the campgrounds have no shade due to fires or insect damage. It can get very hot as they are located down low. They also fill up quickly.

Several years ago we went up through the park on Trail Ridge Road and did not have any problems. Fall River Road was closed due to flood damage. That road was narrow and gravel when I went on it long ago, and might not have been as easy.

Agree that CGs in RMNP are pretty lame because of dead trees courtesy of the mine beetle. We never get reservations because we don't like to be pinned down to a schedule. Most CGs have some sites that are first come-first served. We could not get a site at Mary Lake in Glacier, but no problems elsewhere long as we get there early in the day. There is a USNF campground S of Estes Park if you are arriving late in the day. We got a spot there in the late afternoon.

We often stay at a NF CG or disperse camp in the NF just outside the park (Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier) and drive into the park in the early AM. If we were to strike out we'd just tour the park during the day and go back to the NF site at night.

There are many first come, first served campgrounds in the Rockies, at good elevations for cool temps and some by rushing streams.

They are not in the formal park, but still the Rockies, and very accessible.

Lily,
I agree, but my point is that many 'formal' (NPS CGs) have a few first-come, first served sites.

You should have no problem. I was 8 years old in 1966 and was a passenger in the family sedan, a 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 with a 428 V8, pulling a 25' Holiday Rambler across that very road. Of course, there were 7 people in the car as I had 4 older sisters! I remember it as if it was yesterday. We stayed in Estes Park campground for 2 weeks. One of the best cross country vacations I was ever on. Have at it!

I did the entire loop in my 2011 AI no problem. Take the drive.

There are other dirt road paths to the top, but I would not advise that in an AI. Did that in a jeep.

Parking at the top is tight. I've been there twice. Once, they had an antendant keept the cars out in the RV spots. The other time, it was filled with cars and we couldn't stop.

All the paved roads are an easy drive for the AI. You can drive to the top and back with no problems. It seems the roads are made for the AI.
Enjoy the views and the drive. You’ll love it

I think we could only go to the second gate up. This was the middle May. We left on Tuesday morning and it started snowing Wednesday night and piled up almost 24" by late Thursday. We were on the other side of Kansas by then.

It’s probably still snowed in towards the top.

Not knowing if it's the engine, size, or steering concerns you have but I can offer that we just coincidentally returned two weeks ago from that very place.
No issues whatsoever. All roads were open then.
Traveling Moran Pass was a snap with a 1500 and a 25 FC.
Also did trail ridge road with truck only and it was outstanding.

No problem but busy

We live in Estes Park. Have taken our 25 ft. TT over the top no problem. The park is very busy, especially on weekends. We do not go to town on the weekends. It’s a great place for camping, if you can score a spot. There are several commercial campgrounds there. Check the reviews. If you can not get one in the park, suggest Mary’s Lake or Elk Meadows. Hope you have a great visit.

In 2016 I took my 20’ FC with Jeep GC over Credt Road west to east. It is breath taking and definitely worth it. Some switch back turns were made with caution in a trailer but you should have no problem.
