Rear OEM Speaker Replacement

Inquiring if anyone has been successful in identifying a replacement speaker suitable for the cut-outs in the rear of our Interstates?

If you've attempted this you will have discovered that the inside clearance depth is extremely shallow, (1 7/16") per my measurement. I have just begun my search and not having any luck. This replacement was due to the fact that one of my rear speakers had become blown...consequently wanting to replace both with something of a higher audio quality. Once this task is completed I intend to replace the two front OEM speakers.

Thanks in advance for any possible guidance.

Have you tried calling Crutchfield's?

First off apologies for the weird post title; prior to completing my typing of the correct title "Rear OEM Speaker Replacement" I inadvertently hit enter and my post went "live". Upon attempting to edit/correct the title AF would not permit me to change the title, it would allow me to change any of the other verbiage, but not the title...odd(?).

Anyway, yes I have researched this with Crutchfield...goose eggs. Upon my research with a dozen+ automotive/marine speaker manufacturers I've concluded that the OEM Fusion MS-EL602B two-way speaker has possibly the shortest top mount height profile (1 9/16" ~ 40mm) made for a 6"~6.5" speaker. Consequently I am on to Plan B, which will entail some cabinet fabrication to allow for the added height of an alternative two-way speaker of improved audio quality.

Stay tuned for an explanation and images of this MOD once completed.

Or, you can just get some 1/2 to 1 spacers like these off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ITN4IR6...ing=UTF8&psc=1

Yes, the speakers will hang a little lower, but probably easier than modifying the cabinets. Ill probably go this route with some aftermarket speakers because Ive also been unable to find any other speakers that come close to the shallow depth of the Fusions.

I cant speak to quality, but these have less than 1 depth.

May also look into surface mount speakers. Ive used spacers in vehicle install before. Functionally it was great but was never happy with appearance. It was obvious seeing the spacer behind the edge of the grill

A large hole saw applied to the cabinet bottom could supply some extra depth for the coil. At the worst, there would be a small hump in the bottom of the cabinet that can be covered in a number of ways. You would get at least 1/2" just from the thickness of the cabinet bottom. We keep soft goods in those cabinets, so it would be no real space loss for us. I have hole saws up to 3 1/8" that would easily accept the coil..

Rear OEM Speaker Replacement - MOD Completed!

Replaced the OEM Fusion MS-EL602B rear speakers with a pair of Rockford Fosgate T16 Power 6" 2-Way Speakers.

Utilized a 5" diameter hole saw drill bit.

Covered the holes with an 18ga. 5005 Satin Black Anodized Aluminum 6" x 6" Plate.

Notes
If choosing to install this particular Rockford Fosgate T16 Speaker please note that it has a directional pole-mounted tweeter that when installing you will want to orient this speaker so that the tweeter is pointing toward the front of the rig.

I included Image #4 to illustrate that this particular speaker design with it's 1.93" top mounting depth comes within approximately 1/16" of the bottom of the aluminum cover plate once installed...a very close tolerance, but perfect fit.

I'm in no way, shape or form an audiophile, although I can discern between good or above average audio quality vs. mediocre audio and have felt for some time that an upgrade to the OEM Fusion speakers were needed. My son who is working on his Masters in Acoustical & Audio Engineering approved of this speaker selection for it's price point. All I know is that with the speaker balance shifted 100% to these rear speakers that they sound excellent. I'll be replacing the front two door speakers very soon.
