Prospective owner with questions

Hello, I’ve been lurking for a few years and I’ve been checking in occasionally with the lithium battery efforts, among others but we are finally getting close to actually getting an interstate. We test drove one last weekend in Buda, TX and were impressed by the maneuverability and drivability of the van. However, I have a few questions about options and possibilities with the interstate, if you don’t mind entertaining them.

1: do the interstates come with a push-button start option?

2: can an “add a room” or similar awning wall system be used with the interstate awning?

3: has anyone experimented with being able to raise and lower the rear lounge to be able to have some cargo space if needed? (To accomodate a motorcycle for instance). I understand it wouldn’t be able to go all the way to the roof due to the storage bins, and we are not interested in the twin bed

4: why does airstream replace the 12v A/C on the roof that MB provides with the sprinter with 120v A/C? Is the 120v A/C any better, or is it merely to be able to run it when the engine is off? Wouldn’t it just be easier to have a larger battery bank than carry around the propane and generator?

I’m sure I’ll have more questions, but thanks in advance for your answers.

On the AC- yes, the MB rear AC would only work with the engine running. The 120Vac system will work when plugged into shore power- or with the generator running.

You still need propane for the burners, hot water, furnace and earlier models the refrigerator.
Certainly the generator could be removed and batteries installed, but then once the batteries are dead, you have nothing more. The generator gives you more options (well, I think anyway).

Some have used the ‘add a room’ with awning.

My comments, for what they are worth:

1: IDK

2: I sewed my own awning surround, and it was one ghastly boat-load of work (you can read about it here). HOWEVER, I have an older Interstate with a non-motorized awning. I don't know what could be done with one that automatically withdraws (which is a kind that I would not have, myself). #vansizedsewing



3: Generally speaking, that kind of extensive mod is done by DIYers who start with far less expensive base vehicles than an Interstate. There is only one Interstate owner who I know of who has done this, and that's Notstock. If you go to his late February Instagram posts, you can see a pic.

4: Probably so that it will run easily from shore power. The stock Interstate is built according to simplistic user profile. It was intended to target the high end of the market rather than to provide for user flexibility.

Several of us have done substantial customization. In the case of my husband and me, we started with a much older Interstate (2007) so that we would not be losing value by ripping apart something new.

The new 2019 Sprinters have push-button start like many new cars. But that probably won't be available until the 2020 Interstates are introduced. The current 2019 Interstates are built on 2018 Sprinters.

be careful about OCCC

2016 airstream brochure says OCCC is 1920lbs.. stickier on side door says 1617lbs and weighing it at the scales says 1428lbs. while that may seem like a lot of weight it isn't. water is 250 Lbs, people are 350lbs.. you get the idea. if you are planning on a motorcycle inside you may want to consider a different builder. airstream adds 3200 lbs to a 3500 sprinter. safari condo makes a 3500 version with a bed that lifts up out of the way and they only add 2600 with their build. combined with it being 22ft vs the airstream 24 feet they end up with far more caring capacity. if you decide 4x4 and air suspension is required subtract another 350lbs from the OCCC

I say this out of experience.. we tow a trailer now... the toys might fit in the airstream but doing so puts us over the GWVR. trailer makes us 40 feet long .. not 24...

Answering #4. The Sprinter 12v roof A/C is run off a secondary A/C compression on the engine and only the circulating fan runs off of 12v. Airstream doesn’t use that because they wanted you to be able to use the roof A/C while parked when the A/C in the dash is unavailable.

Boxter— good to know about the 2020s. We are waiting to see what airstream does with the new model before we make a decision. (Not just for the bush-button start)

IB— thanks for your advice. I’ll take a look at notstock’s page to see what’s in the realm of possible. The bed would still need to be tall enough underneath it to park a motorcycle... hopefully notstock mentions that in his post.

Also, we are terrible at sewing, so we’d probably try the store bought add-a-room awning kits.

Camerons— my bike is about 500 lbs and we are two adults and two kids who combine to about 400 lbs. that will increase as the kids get older, but I probably won’t be bringing my bike when I bring the kids.

LB— good point about the engine driven compressor. I hadn’t thought about that. So I’m guessing the A/C (120V) A/C is still the best way to go for use when the engine is off. Although, I saw a 12V (DC) A/C on amazon made by kingtec, but it seems to not be available anymore. I thought MB would have used one of those. It doesn’t seem to need an engine driven compressor.
