Pic taken about an hour ago. Silly us - we came out here thinking that THIS was the year we were finally going to get the camp in shape. In actuality, we drastically underestimated the amount of damage inflicted by Hurricane Dorian. We’v spent all of our time just cleaning up, and we are about 1% done.

We were officially released from quarantine at midnight. Today will be our first day of moving around a bit.

Excuse me for being nosy, but this camp sight and image is spectacular...a little hint where this gem might be?

Eastern side of Cape Breton Island, facing the Gabarus Wilderness Area (similar to National Wildlife Refuge in America).

I was born and raised in this area and have owned this land for 27 years. However it was only 3 years ago that I could finally afford to put in my private road and start using the property. It’s designed for our van. The siting and parking pad were laid out to best accommodate the Interstate.

Drone view, from my Instagram quarantine series (username interstate.blog). Behind the our white-roofed van is a Clam Venture screened room enclosing a picnic table. Almost everything in the foreground is my property. Everything in the background is protected wilderness.

As the saying goes, "It's an ill wind that blows no good." That hurricane opened up your lake view.

Beautiful pics. Glad you are able to be out enjoying your Interstate in places less than 100 degrees.

Thanks. I note with trepidation that my husband increasingly wants a more permanent structure on our land. It would need to be a hum-dinger of an off-grid design because it’s a harsh, harsh environment (which looks postcard-perfect in August but January tells a very different story), and there’s no way that we could ever afford to bring utilities all the way in there. But hum-dinger engineering designs are what he specializes in.

I can't wait to see what he comes up with!

Picture of your Interstate

I’m quite sure that he, as a member in good standing of the Department of Overkill Engineering, he’ll be able to come up with something ‘interesting in the Spockian sense!’

Reduced travel during the pandemic has allowed for some image captures that would normally be impossible due to congestion.

Lake City and Creede, Colorado

Wrapping up our recent Colorado trips, here are a couple of really good RV parks:

Highlander RV Park, a few miles south of Lake City, near lake San Cristobal

Antlers Resort & RV Park, on Arkansas River near Creede

Leigh & Bettie,
We stayed there a few years ago. Is the restaurant still open at Antlers Campground? We had awesome meals there which included fresh catch trout. The setting, right on the river, is a very nice way to enjoy a meal.To be at the headwaters of the Arkansas River was unique because the river also runs through our hometown of Tulsa. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Antlers restaurant was open for breakfast and dinner, not lunch. Dinner was a bit fancy for us and we skipped it. Breakfast was good! setting can't be beat.

BTW, I mistyped above. Antlers (near Creede) is on the Rio Grande, not Arkansas.

There are some very nice public and private campgrounds along the Rio Grande and Arkansas rivers in Colorado.

Another ill wind is fixin’ to blow even more no good. We were joking to ourselves before leaving a few weeks ago, “If we can just go ONE year without a major hurricane crashing through here, we could really do some catching up on the forest management.”

So much for that hope. Hurricane Teddy is forecast to strike Nova Scotia directly. Even if the track wavers in the next few days, some part of the province is going to get hammered. As it stands, the current track puts my property in a direct strike by the dirty side, with the worst possible wind approach angle. It’s almost the same track as Dorian which hit 1 year and 3 days ago. Maybe worse.

Two weeks ago, my husband wanted to hide the picnic table off to one side of the property. I said, “Nope, it’s going into the center of the parking pad where falling trees will do it the least damage.”
