Texas Canyon I-10 Rest Stop, Arizona

En route east to Las Cruces, NM after a weekend at the Black Canyon Good Sam RV Park, and touring the Sedona area. Certainly cooler, more comfortable evenings than found in Phoenix.

Here you see come into full flower one of the intentions behind getting a teched-out camper van rather than a cottage. We have a property in Houston and a property on the extreme eastern side of Cape Breton Island. Not only are we GOING to get hit with hurricanes, what doesn't hit one tends to hit the other, so we get about twice the impacts of any given single-property owner in higher-risk areas. The camper van can be driven out of harm's way, no matter where it happens to be at the time.

What in the bloody name of Sam Houston is this new practice of re-naming hurricanes as "post-tropical storms" once they pass certain northern latitudes?!

For God's sake, this thing hit Nova Scotia with 90-mph sustained winds! That's not a storm - it's a *HURRICANE*! That's NOT ONLY a hurricane, it's a powerful one. Re-classifying it as any kind of "storm" is only going to degrade public perception of the dangers.

Anyway, we will clean this mess up - it's not a big deal. A lot of trees came down all over the place, but we have thousands more. If I'd had a crystal ball, I would have left our chain saw with my father so that I could fly up a time or two before our next road trip, to get the jump on clearing the road and pad so that we can drive in upon our next arrival.

For comparison, I tried to place my Dad's downed tree photos in approximately the same orientation as the "last day" trip photos I had taken two weeks before:

Just now saw your post above. That's incredible damage for a storm so far north. That the storm even stayed together that long is equally incredible.

And zero mention in the news that I saw, either.

Nova Scotia has less than 1 million people and a very thin news industry. A LOT of stuff does not get reported, unfortunately.

Hurricane Juan hit Nova Scotia as a Category 2 in 2003. I had a lot of damage at that time also, but that was years before I started developing the property, so it was of no consequence to me. Just more logs to nourish the forest floor.

I hereby issue the Street Art Challenge:

Find a way to incorporate your Interstate into the street art in your local city. Not just parked in front of it like a beached whale.

Find a way to frame the shot so that the van seems to somehow belong in the scene. Like maybe a reflection that makes it dissolve, or a building that seems to embrace it.

It's not as easy as it sounds. The Interstate is a huge lumbering thing devoid of thirds and diagonals. Even under the best of circumstances, it's a difficult beast to artify.

A few feeble attempts in this blog post, and a reflection shot below the link:

VAN PLUS STREET ART EQUALS POTENTIAL

Very nice!!! Will see if I can do the same. There is a local art supply store with some amazing murals done by local artists...

Urban rally

We arrived at the assembly point east of Brownwood in light rain. We were led by a low-traffic route to our water-electric parking place in the field behind the fire company. I managed to get set up before the cold front rolled through with rain so heavy that we couldn't see across the street. Others are parked by the railroad station and in a field nearby.

The city of Brownwood has been a great host, other than weather. It is still cold and windy. We have had some great seminars and a really good country dance band each night.

We have a great end parking spot, since we arrived early. This is my first (200+ mile) tow of my new Fiesta toad. We averaged 15 mpg against a wind most of the way. I can tell the difference the extra 500# makes compared to the smart I towed before.

This was an "urban rally" with Airstreams parked in various places around town, some with W/E and some simply in parking spots or along streets. With 50 or so Airstreams coming into a strange town, they had to have a system to get everyone to their parking place.

They set up in the parking lot of a large shopping mall on the side of town where most would be arriving. After checking that we were registered, we followed a passenger car guide through a non-congested route to the parking lot behind the fire station where there are about 40 pads with water/electric.

Arrivals were limited to between 1 and 8 PM. We were fortunate to arrive at 1:05, just ahead of a cold front. I had just barely time to hook up before a heavy downpour. Kudos to the parkers who had to endure about 1 1/2 hours of sheets of rain.

The rally was planned extremely well (except for the weather). Excellent meeting rooms were all within walking distance of our space.

Brownwood is a typical "suffering city" in many ways, but city facilities are excellent. Most GIs in the Second World War came by rail to Camp Bowie in Brownwood on the way to the Pacific Theater. Eighty thousand GIs were stationed there. We met in the restored rail depot. Adjacent is what was one of the original "Harvey House" restaurants, now the Chamber of Commerce.
