No more Twin options?

Yesterday, I received the following note from a very large Airstream Dealer - “Airstream is no longer offering a twin version in any of the Interstates”..

We’ve been toying with the idea of drastically downsizing our travel vehicle and the Interstate Grand Tour Ext Twin was a consideration (so is/was the Winnebago Boldt).

The dealer said they’ll be able to get an exception for the next month or so but after that the Twin is gone. We have plans through the Spring so we’ll not be rushed into a decision.

Have others heard the same regarding the Interstate Twin?

Also, what’s going on with the 2020 Interstate? We tried several dealers with no inventory. We’ve also tried to find out what the changes are between the 2019 and 2020. Seems very little information or video walkthroughs to be seen.

A bit confused.

Hi

With the new factory going online at Jackson Center, the whole model intro process for 2020 has been a bit "interesting". There are a number of models that have had limited information come out on the 2020 version. My guess is that until the factories get moved around, they are sticking with the 2019's and not trying to whip up interest in the 2020 versions of those models. That's only a guess ....

Best bet - get on the phone to other dealers or straight to JC and see what they say. The information *does* seem to exist, it just has not been pushed out "to the public".

This doesn't necessarily affect the twin bed issue, but Mercedes has just released an updated Sprinter chassis with a number of significant improvements. I wonder if AS is waiting to get some of these new models into their pipeline before rolling out the 2020 Interstates.

I got an email fromthem on September 17

Quote:
Thank you for your e-mail to Airstream recently. It is very good to hear from you again.

We are very close to publishing the 2020 full color Interstate EXT brochure. In the mean-time, please find the 2020 Interstate flyer attached for your review. Also, I believe RV One will have a 2020 GT arrive in early October.
But I failed to ask about Twin Bed option availability...

I suggest you use the “Contact Us” form in their website or just give them a call to confirm. And do share the outcome... we are interested on a Twin Bed setup for our next RV. So far, from what I hbe been looking at, Airstream has one of the better setups, in Class B, for Twin Beds...

On the Winnebago Bolt... we were very disappointed with it. Off our list.

Be sure to go see it and pay attention to fit and finish. The only great thing about it is that Volta battery system. Everything else looked out of place for a $200k ($150k after discounts) Class B RV...

Thank you everyone. Sounds like I just need to be a little more patient. We’re not in a rush.

As a side note to uncle bob's post that mentions the factory expansion, I noticed on the Airstream site the other day this note regarding factory tours:
"Notice: With the expansion of the Airstream Mothership, there will be a transition period when plant tours will be unavailable starting December 1 through the end of April 2020."

Van production

There are not enough MB chassis units to supply demand
and until the new Airstream Factory is in to full swing production
the company cannot get the units it could sell.

It’s a political buying game for MB with all the b van companies.

I just left the factory and again toured the van side. It’s a very
limited operation due to both demand and current production space.

Good summary of problem. If you have been reading the Sprinter-Source forum and other automobile media you will quickly learn the MB Sprinter deliveries are having significant problems. New design from a new plant in USA, with MB global part shortages has been disaster to Sprinter deliveries in USA/Canada.

Hopefully all things Sprinter will be solved by late next year when I plan to replace my current B-van, or else I might have to go with a Ford Transit.

Would guess that the large Amazon order of Sprinters also contributed to the delay.

Unhappy

Confirmed with the dealer here in Tampa, FL (Airstream of Tampa-RVOne) as well... Twin bed floor plan not available... so much for one of my future options without having to make lots of modifications...

So easy to convert to twins. Biggest cost is the mattresses and that can range from the custom mattresses that I have down to Wal-Mart foam toppers similar to what I used on my 2014.

It took me a week, start to finish, at age 86, working alone. Main tools were my table saw and drill. Cost was about $200 plus the mattresses. Sold the couch for $300.

John,

We are going to play around first with not bringing together the two bench seats and see how that works. Just to test... since we place three self-inflating sleeping pads, it is easy to test this out. We will just use one on each side and twin-bed sheets and see what it is like. Might still be an issue since the folded bench still is too wide for easy of getting in and out only on the side bench area... anyway, we will test that first. We have years before we actually benefit from TB setup.

Charlesk,
We are considering the sale of our 2016 GT Ext Twin. Excellent shape. If interested I will post my cell.

Great advice! I have been chatting with another member through PM. I should have worded my response different.
