Is it really $434-$800 to replace a propane fill valve?

I have a 2015 Airstream Interstate and the remote fill valve on the rear passenger side has become "leaky"...We've had propane fillers "fix" it short term by wiggling a screwdriver in the valve -- and one of them gave us a screw on adapter valve that keeps the propane from leaking out.

We went to a trailer place to try get this issue fixed and found out that you cannot just get the valve and replace it, you have to buy the complete remote assembly for $443! and then get 1-2 hours of labor. We were quoted from one place at $800 to fix the remote filler valve.

There must be a source for just the valve? Anyone?

That has to be a reasonable and easier fix that replacing the whole "LPGG remote fill assembly, (includes bracket, switch, Hose 602109-02, and valves)" Part number: 454680

I would think an hour of labour and a $50 valve should fix the issue? If anyone has any ideas or legitimate solutions or even a good reason why i should just go ahead and spend $500-$800 to fix the remote filler valve, I would love to hear it all. Thanks!

The price seems in the reasonable range. We have a 2021 which uses the toriodol propane tank ( donut shaped where spare goes). The hose was leaking. It was 550 to drop tank and replace a 30$ hose. Expensive yes but I wrote it off as it costs what it costs.

IDK. Propane not something I want too much DIY hassle with when it’s near generator open / flames etc.
good luck

Yeah, I get what you're saying, but you're saying the $550 was for labor. I dont have any issues paying experts to do the work - it's the part cost im struggling with.

You paid $30 for hose, thats about right, and I think $50 for a valve is right. I think that I should be able to source just the part thats faulty and not have to replace the whole remote panel at $443. Seems like a waste of money and good parts on the panel that aren't faulty.

So im looking for a sources for just the replacement remote valve, if possible, or a reason I need to replace the whole remote panel.

The individual parts can be sourced and the repair done by you, if you’re willing to do the work. Propane is easy to work with, just most folks are afraid of it. But understand, it’s more than just changing out the valve. If the tank has fuel in it, it will need to be transferred out or released. Caution will need to be taken with anything that can cause a spark including static electricity, after the repair if completed, checking for leaking, etc.. My guess, there’s someone on YouTube that already made a video on this subject.

Enjoy,

Enjoy,
This response hits the nail on the head in multiple ways, capturing something that my husband and I learned over the first year of our Interstate ownership. Most of the Interstate’s systems are not that complicated - repairs and upgrades can be creatively DIY’d. BUT - if one has never tackled those jobs before, it can seem overwhelming and it can gobble up a lot of a newbie’s time.

Relatedly regarding the propane, if an owner replaces one worn component of the system, they should plan to do all of the perishable components, and all at once, in order to save labor and hassle. In other words, don’t crack open that system only to have to re-visit it again the following year. Replace the two regulators (one internal to the generator, one external downstream of the tank), the valve, and all of the flex lines at once. Bing, bang, bong, you will be done with it for at least another 5 years of ownership.

Here’s my blog post on how we replaced our lines, step by step. This seemed intimidating at the time, but it really wasn’t difficult. The next time I do it, I will be working from a position of foreknowledge and it will be a 3-hour no-brainer:

REPLACING THE LP FLEX LINES IN AN AIRSTREAM INTERSTATE

I would only offer suggest different systems offer different complexity.

on the 2021s forward they switched to the donut fuel tank and that’s why I mentioned it is significantly more complicated because it’s bolted into the frame with inch and a quarter bolts and there’s not a lot of room to work. Perhaps with an air wrench, I’m sure woils help.

With that, I felt it spending the money and not having to deal with dropping a steel tank and then lifting it back into place, etc. was worth a significant labor charge that I gladly paid. But to each diy’r choice. I I was in a rush and I made the mistake. I do agree. I should’ve changed it out both regulators and the hoses at that time.

They will add likely 30$ each since labor already included for one hose changeout.
